MONROVIA – The Ethiopian Airlines has officially resumed its operations in Liberia, marking a significant milestone in the airline’s commitment to connecting African nations and fostering regional integration. The airline’s return is expected to boost Liberia’s connectivity to the global network, while promoting tourism, trade, and economic growth in the country
Speaking at the ceremony over the weekend at the Roberts International Airport in Margibi County, President Boakai described the achievement as a symbol of strengthened ties between Liberia and Ethiopia, and a major boost to the aviation and tourism sectors.
The Liberian leader noted that the return of Ethiopian Airlines is a testament to Liberia’s growing economic potential and a reaffirmation of the enduring partnership between the two nations.
“Ethiopian Airlines’ return to Liberia signifies much more than the reopening of air routes; it is a powerful symbol of our long-standing friendship, mutual respect, and shared African heritage,” he said.
The President highlighted the historical connection between Liberia and Ethiopia, emphasizing their shared roles as pioneers of African independence and advocates for Pan-Africanism.
He commended Ethiopian Airlines for its resilience and leadership in connecting the African continent to the world, describing the airline as “a source of pride for all of Africa.”
The recommencement of direct flights between Monrovia and Addis Ababa is expected to open new opportunities for trade, tourism, and cooperation in areas such as education and culture.
The President noted that this development will serve as a bridge for closer economic and diplomatic ties, foster investment, and create job opportunities, particularly in the aviation and tourism sectors.
President Boakai noted by saying, “This historic flight marks a new era of cooperation that goes to reaffirm our commitment to African solidarity and to the broader vision of a peaceful, prosperous, and integrated continent.
President Boakai, who celebrated his birthday last Saturday, called on Liberians to seize the opportunities brought by this development, encouraging the nation to work together to achieve greater economic growth and regional integration.
He noted that the resumption of Ethiopian Airlines’ flights is not just a bilateral achievement but a reflection of the broader Pan-African vision of unity and progress.
For his part, Ethiopian Airlines Group Chief Executive Officer, Mesfin Tasew said, “We are pleased to resume our flights to Monrovia, reinforcing our dedication to connecting Africa and promoting intra-African trade.
“In line with our vision of providing the best travel experience, we believe that our presence in Liberia will enhance opportunities for business and tourism, thus driving mutual growth,” he noted, adding, “This resumption of services represents the strengthening of ties and the bridging of cultures between our two great nations.
He told the gathering that the flights to Monrovia will operate three times a week, providing seamless access to Liberia’s rich cultural and natural attractions.
“Monrovia, known for its vibrant culture, rich history, and natural beauty, is now more accessible to visitors from around the world through the hub in Addis Ababa,” he said, stating that travelers can explore Liberia’s stunning beaches, lush jungles, and historical sites, benefiting from the restored air connection that supports the region’s economic development.
Making remarks, Ethiopian Group Chief Commercial Officer Lemma Yadecha said, “Ethiopian Airlines has a long-standing history with Monrovia, having inaugurated its first flight service to this vibrant city in November 1966.
“Since then, we have built a legacy based on trust, reliability, and strong ties between the two nations. Our nations are blessed with beautiful natural gifts and abundant resources, from Ethiopia’s stunning highlands to Liberia’s lush rainforests,” he said, adding, “Ethiopian Airlines is now here to bridge the gap between our two nations, strategically located at the center of the continent; Ethiopian Airlines connects Liberia and its esteemed people to over 140 destinations worldwide.
Disclosing further, he said, “We are proud to report that we have already welcomed 16 Business Class passengers and 245 Economic Class passengers this morning, which is promising as forecasts also indicate a strong demand for travel.”
