MONROVIA – As the clock ticks closer to the holding of Liberia’s next presidential and general elections, the public should expect to witness a lot of political crossovers from across the aisles of the opposition community and the ruling establishment. In manifestation of such crossovers, another group calling itself “Disenchanted CDCians Against the Reelection of the CDC Government” has presented a petition to the Standard Bearer of the Unity Party and former Vice President of Liberia, Ambassador Joseph Nyuma Boakai, calling for unity in the opposition as the surest means to defeating the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) and making President Weah a one-term President.
The anti-Weah reelection Movement, chaired by Alexander B. Monoson, in a December 26, 2022 press release outlined a number of reasons why the CDC Government should be voted out of power. The group cited bad governance, poor performance, abandonment of the country by President Weah for 48 days, the unstable exchange rate in the nation and lack of security for the nation and its people, among others as reasons why Liberians should never give President Weah a second chance to misrule the country.
Delivering their petition over the weekend to Ambassador Boakai, the Disenchanted CDCians Against the Reelection of President Weah also cited the lack of investment to create jobs in the country, as well as the CDC-led Government’s usurpation of projects that were done or initiated by the Unity Party Government without giving credit to the past government as among the myriads of reasons why the voters should not reelect President Weah on October 10, 2023.
The Movement’s leader Alexander B. Monoson further called on the opposition to drop their personal egos and unite in order to make the CDC Government a one-term Presidency.
Receiving the statement of petition on behalf of the Standard Bearer, the Chairman of the former ruling Unity Party, Reverend Dr. Luther Tarpeh welcome the Movement to the Offices of the Standard Bearer, noting that wise men often change, pointing out Liberians who are academically inclined have seen the reality. “We are all in this together, especially for the young people,” Dr. Tarpeh intoned.
He further stated said that JNB (as Ambassador Joseph Nyuma Boakai is popularly called) is a man who loves Liberia and is concerned about the country; and that the Unity Party is working in collaboration with other stakeholders to defeat the CDC in 2023.
Chairman Tarpeh thanked the youths for the bold step and assured further discussion on their proposition to the Standard Bearer of the Unity Party, cautioning that Liberia will not be built on lies and deception.
