CU Commences 60th Graduation Exercises -“Love God, Yourself, Your Neighbor” – Bishop Hart Tells Graduates
Ahead of its 60th Convocation program on Friday, June 17, 2022 the Cuttington University, yesterday, Sunday, June 12, 2022 held its Baccalaureate program on the main campus of the university in Suacoco, Bong County, which was witnessed by hundreds of participants including faculty and staff of the institution, the graduates, their family members, friends and well-wishers. The Most Reverend Dr. Jonathan Bonaparte Hart, retired Bishop of the Episcopal Church of Liberia and Guest Preacher of the occasion called on the graduates to “love God, their neighbors and themselves”.
Speaking from the Biblical perspective where Christ in some of his many teachings stated that loving one’s neighbor as oneself is the greatest commandment in the scripture, Bishop Hart admonished the new graduates that God created man and the universe and put in place the good things life can offer for mankind to enjoy them, and so, it is incumbent on mankind to love God, their neighbors and themselves so that they will live in perfection for God.
“Today, I invite you to love God with your mind, your soul, love yourself and love your neighbor. Why do I say love your God? It is because God created the world, He created me, and He created you. In creating the world and mankind, he provided for you, provided for your parents and the people that care for the world,” Rev. Hart said.
Speaking about the wisdom that God gave humankind, Reverend Hart said it was such wisdom from God that brought inspiration for the many inventions in the world in many fields of human endeavors, be it in medicine, science and technology. The renown cleric marveled at the wonderful way that God created water that is a necessity for survival, to the extent that no matter what other form of liquid is consumed, water remains the ultimate that guarantees survival.
Rev. Hart told the graduates to combine what they have acquired at CU in whatever discipline with the love for God and their compatriots. He urged the graduates to imbibe the Holy Spirit to allow them become worthy ambassadors of their people and show commitment to the development and welfare of the country.
Rev. Dr. Hart, who formerly served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees, is a graduate of the university. He also obtained his Master’s degree in Divinity from the Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA. While serving as Bishop of the Episcopal Church of Liberia, he was elected by the Episcopal College of Internal Province of West Africa on March 1, 2014 and was enthroned at the Cathedral Church of Holy Trinity in Monrovia on July 6, 2014 as Archbishop and again enthroned as the Primate and Archbishop of the Church of the Province of West Africa at the Cathedral Church of the Holy Trinity, in Monrovia on 3 March, 2019.
