MONROVIA – China has deepened its engagement in Liberia’s security sector with the handover of police supplies to the Liberia National Police (LNP), positioning the assistance as both a response to operational needs and a symbol of strategic alignment between the two countries. Speaking at the LNP on Wednesday, the Chinese Ambassador to Liberia, His His Excellency Yin Chengwu framed the donation as an outcome of presidential-level diplomacy and as support for Liberia’s ARREST Agenda for Inclusive Development. Beyond equipment, the gesture highlights China’s growing role in capacity-building for law enforcement, raising broader questions about security cooperation, development priorities, and the evolving contours of China–Liberia relations.

Addressing senior government officials, police leadership, and invited guests, the Chinese Ambassador to Liberia is His Excellency Yin Chengwu formally handed over a package of China-aid police supplies to the Liberia National Police, expressing appreciation for what he described as close cooperation between the LNP and the Chinese Embassy.

The donated items include police uniforms, motorcycles, and interphones, all aimed at enhancing the LNP’s mobility, communication, and operational readiness. According to the Ambassador, the equipment is expected to support field operations, community policing, and rapid response capabilities across the country.

Outcome of Xi–Boakai Engagement

Ambassador Yin Chengwu disclosed that the police supplies are a direct outcome of discussions between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Liberian President Joseph Nyuma Boakai during the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China–Africa Cooperation (FOCAC).

He described the donation as a concrete example of how high-level diplomatic engagements are being translated into practical support on the ground, particularly in sectors critical to national stability.

Backing Liberia’s Security and ARREST Agenda

In his remarks, the Ambassador emphasized that strengthening law enforcement capacity is central to Liberia’s development goals, noting that public security underpins the rule of law and inclusive growth.

He linked the assistance to the Liberian government’s ARREST Agenda for Inclusive Development, describing public security as essential to creating a safe and stable environment that serves the interests of the Liberian people. He added that China is also undertaking other development projects in support of the agenda.

Law Enforcement as Community Guardians

The Chinese envoy paid tribute to Liberian police officers, describing them as guardians of the community who operate under demanding and often dangerous conditions.

He noted that effective policing requires not only commitment and sacrifice, but also adequate tools and resources, stating that the donated supplies are intended to acknowledge the LNP’s service and support its daily duties.

China–Liberia Strategic Partnership Deepens

Yin Chengwu characterized the handover ceremony as a vivid demonstration of the China–Liberia strategic partnership, stressing that the event represents more than material support.

He cited past cooperation in the law enforcement sector, including training programs attended by Liberian officers in China and the dedication of a Fingerprint Examination Laboratory equipment project in 2024, describing the new supplies as another milestone in bilateral relations.

Commitment to Continued Cooperation

The Ambassador reaffirmed China’s commitment to sustained cooperation and exchange with the Liberia National Police, emphasizing mutual understanding, trust, and shared development goals.

“As the cooperation between China and Liberia deepens,” he said, “the strategic partnership will embrace an ever brighter future.”
