MONROVIA – Amid serious internal cracks within the Coalition for Democratic Change’s architecture evidenced dozen lawmakers elected on its ticket joining forces with political rivals to unseat a CDC House Speaker, many voices are bellowing from both partisans and nonpartisans regarding what would be the fate of the “reengage partisans”. Suggestions regarding how the party copes with the shock of the situation are mixed and confusing. Another executive member of the CDC has a more radical position on the matter, suggesting amongst other things severing relations and declaring persona non crata. The Analyst reports.
A ranking executive member of the former ruling but now major opposition party, the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC), has been recharging party spirits in the aftermath of chaos taking place within the party, whereby nearly a dozen lawmakers who benefitted from party support to cling victories in the 2023 general elections have allied with opposition colleagues to unseat a fellow partisan, Fonati Koffa, from the prestigious position of Speaker of the House of Representatives.
In her social media post, former senatorial candidate Paulita Wie wrote: “I think our political party should start preparing for by-elections now because the question of Legislative abandonment is in reality while it is alleged that the Unity Party, Movement for Democracy and Reconstruction, and some lawmakers of the Coalition for Democratic Change wine and dine at hotels without coming to work to do the Liberian people job for which they were elected to do but just creating Indian movies and making unnecessary noise at Capitol Building while they receive huge salaries.”
Wie said the Coalition for Democratic Change is not build on individuals but institution. She added: “We respect, elect, defend and support our own especially when they are doing the right things within the confines of the law and history,” she said in the short post.
The former Internal Affairs Ministry official further noted that some Chairmen of the party, without winning records, do come and go without a single legacy for the party, but the Party still remains supreme.”
Said noted that some lawmakers for whom partisans stood under the sun and rain, without even paying dues to support the party or masses, have the audacity to later betray the party when “we least expected them”.
She said despite the situation CDC still “has a fighting and undying spirit and we are very resilient; and in crisis, we stand together for the common good of our institution”.
Further inspiring partisans to say course, Madam Wie asserted: “God first, their families; CDC made most of them what they are today. Some of CDC lawmakers today couldn’t afford a cent or to even pay to contest in primaries; some were selling planks with giggers in their toes; some were selling at ‘lapper be door’ cold bowl shops; some had no history of politics and some even used sweet mouth on partisans to ride to state power. But today we are closely watching with eyes of eagles and will remind them and take legal actions against those that try to betray this party. The people will resist them.”
She continued: “It is not about how long but how well. Credentials of some members of the CDC Legislative Caucus are huge and unmatched, and we also want to appreciate them for their tremendous love and support to the party. God bless you all. To some independent lawmakers who are standing with the Speaker and the Constitution of Liberia in this battle, we want to say thank you plenty for being on the right side of history. Liberians are watching.”
The CDC female top executive had a word to the ruling Unity Party. She said: “To the ruling party or establishment, don’t think you can play smart spider game on the Liberian people. It is alleged that the Executive is only supporting the Upper House and not the lower house in terms of their benefits only because you have a Speaker and Deputy Speaker who are from the Opposition Party CDC. Do you want to suffocate the Representatives till they go against the Speaker? We are closely following and will speak true to power without fear or favour until the right things are done. Liberia first!”
