‘Boost, Not Boast’ -Dr. Tipoteh Pares Revenue Boost with Rising Corruption

MONROVIA – Veteran Liberia economist and politician has been faulting brags by the country’s revenue- generation officials amid rampant corruption, stating that these boasts have had no bearing and effect on transformation and development.

Togba-Nah Tipoteh said in a recent opinion piece that there are friends of his in government who continue to boast that they can boost the revenue of the government but that these friends are not friends of the people because they are not telling the truth.

The truth is that it is impossible for revenue to go up when the government has no working agenda to get corruption to go down, Dr. Tipoteh opined.

“Remember that the facts show corruption is going up. This is the reason that the immediate past government and the present one point to corruption as the number one enemy of Liberia,” he said. “Why do the powers continue to boast that revenue can go up when the facts show that corruption prevails. They do so because they are promoting the money-driven system, where corruption prevails.”

The former Planning and Economic Affairs Minister expressed disdain about a lot of talk about actions to be taken to raise revenue when corruption prevails and truncates development.

“This is the reason for President Ellen Jonson Sirleaf saying to the National Legislators of Liberia on her eighty sixth birthday that they must Make Laws Not Make Noise,” he said. “When any person makes noise and not laws, the person is not credible. Take a look at the National Legislators of Liberia who just make noise rather than make laws as they continue to have access to at least L$200,000 a day and their foreign business friends have access to at least L$300,000,000 a day while almost all Liberian have access to at most less than LD300 a day, as per the Annual Reports of CBL, LISGIS, MFDP, MCI, WB. IMF, ADB ad UNDP)”.

Tipoteh reminded the ruling establishment that the voters of Liberia are not happy with the prevailing societal situation as the evidence for this was seen at the polls of October 10, 2023 Election, when nearly all of the National Legislators of Liberia who wanted to be re-elected were not re-elected.

“This did not happen accidentally. It happened through the awareness raising of the people of Liberia by the people who love Liberia,” he asserted, adding that it was only “this awareness raising that transforms the unfair prevailing electoral system into the fair enduring electoral system.”

He concluded: “It is only through this transformation within the Rule of Law that persons with good records can get elected to bring in the system of Justice, the indispensable ingredient for Peace and Progress in Liberian and in any other country.”
