“Better to Light a Candle Than Sleep in Darkness” -Charlyne Brumskine Pays Dillon His Dues; Says He’s the Right Man

Monsterrado County senator Abraham Darius Dillon’s bid to reclaim his hotly contested seat received a power boost on Saturday, August 30, 2020 when the late Counsellor Charles Walker Brumskine’s daughter stood in her father shoes to explain to the Liberian people why Dillon is the right man to lead Montserrado County in the House of Senate.

Addressing the multitude of Liberty Party and CPP partisans during programs marking the official endorsement of Senator Abraham Darius Dillon as the unanimous choice of the Collaborating Political Parties, Counsellor Charlyne Brumskine said Liberians, especially the youths, must never allow their light to be extinguished.

“It is better to light a candle than to sleep in darkness. We have the light today. When you light the candle, you will not sleep in darkness. If you look around here, you will observe that the majority of the people here are between the ages of 18 to 35. Amandla awethu was the battle cry of the South African people during their liberation struggle. Amandla means ‘power’. Awethu means ‘to the people’. You, the youth are the people that this struggle is all about,” Cllr. Brumskine stated.

She said, as the nation faces extremely difficult times, Liberians should make conscious decisions at the polls during the December 8 elections.

“We are facing difficult times in our nation. This election is not about the CPP versus the CDC; neither the LP versus the ANC. It is not about the people of Grand Bassa County versus the people from Lofa County. It is not about Christians versus Moslems, neither about men versus women. It is about Liberia. Our country is being left behind,” Cllr. Brumskine lamented.

Inviting Senator Dillon to the podium, Cllr. Brusmkine passionately recounted the many years of struggle that the Liberty Party had to endure to see this day.

“This man and I have fought, parted ways, came back together, fought and came together. The man that taught us is no longer. The last time we stood on this platform was just before the 2017 presidential elections. Dillon and I danced on this same podium. We thought Liberia was ready for a turning point. Since the old man died, we have not stood together. This is the man who remained for long with the party. He said we have to do it for Cllr. Brumskine, to protect his legacy.    Brumskine lived and died for a better Liberia. Brumskine believed in you. Brumskine believed in this man. Dillon will carry that light. We must make sure that on December 8 this man is elected as senator of Montserrado County,” Ms. Brumskine shouted to thunderous chants of “ADD!!! ADD!!!” from the multitude.

The endorsement and proffering of encouraging words of support from Cllr. Charlyne Brumskine to Senator Dillon, most especially her reference to Dillon having remained long with the Liberty Party, followed the strains and stress that the Liberty Party underwent in mid-December 2017 when almost all of its top officials jumped ship to endorse George Weah of the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) for the December 26 runoff.

At an elaborate program held at the CDC headquarters in Congo Town at the time, LP Vice Presidential candidate Harrison Karnwea, LP National Chairman Benjamin Sanvee and LP financier, as well as other top raking LP members, all endorsed George Weah in a move that left the Liberty Party splintered right in the middle.

Darius Dillon, LP Secretary General Jacob Smith, and a handful of party stalwarts remained with the Charles Brumskine faction as the LP joined ranks with the Unity Party in its failed fraud case at the National Elections Commission and the Supreme Court.
