‘As Nimba mourns, it also Stands at Crossroads’ -Rep. Bility Says In Moving Tribute Honoring Fallen PJY
MONROVIA – The shock and taunt that greeted the passing of former warlord, gospel preacher and politician Prince Y. Johnson on November 28 unexpectedly gave way to solemnity and national quiet – a semblance of unity – in the country. A gamut of honeyed tributes has come from across the aisle though many remain uncertain what a county and people he cherished, protected and benefited from would become in the near future. Another eminent son of the county, District #7 Representative Musa Hassan Bility, explores the conundrum while presenting his eulogy studded in rhyme and wit, as The Analyst reports.
He declares: “As Nimba County mourns, it also stands at a crossroads. The man who once liberated it from brutality is no longer here to guide it. The people he fought for must now fight for themselves—not with weapons or grudges, but with vision and purpose.
“Let this be his legacy: not the wars he waged, but the dreams he had for his people—a united, empowered Nimba, free from the scars of its past. His life was a mirror of Liberia’s story: beautiful and tragic, inspiring and painful, full of contradictions but undeniably impactful.”
Bility said though the man is gone, his name will echo through history for he was many things—a soldier, a politician, a leader, a father, a paradox. Above all, he was a son of Nimba.
“The earth has claimed him. Prince Yormie Johnson, the towering figure whose shadow loomed over Nimba County for decades, is gone,” he said and added: “He leaves behind a legacy as complex as the man himself—both revered and reviled, celebrated and condemned, remembered and questioned. His burial has brought with it not the closure many hoped for, but an uneasy calm, a stillness heavy with questions and uncertainties.”
According to him, Prince Johnson was no ordinary man as, to some, he was a liberator, the voice that rose against tyranny when silence had gripped a wounded nation.
“He was the champion of Nimba County, a man who stood firm in defense of his people, even at great personal cost. For others, he was a reminder of a darker time, a man whose actions during Liberia’s turbulent years still evoke pain and division. Yet, whether admired or criticized, no one could deny his impact—a man who forced the world to notice him and the people he fought for.”
Continuing the tribute, Bility opined: “As he lay in state, Nimba County stood still. The faces in the crowd reflected everything he meant to his people: gratitude, grief, defiance, and a deep, abiding love that refused to yield. For his supporters, his life embodied their own struggles—the fight for survival, identity, and recognition. He gave them a sense of belonging in a world that often dismissed them.”
He observed that beneath the tributes and tears, an unspoken tension simmered, and as Prince Johnson gone, the question remains: What now?
“He was both a symbol of unity and a source of division, a man who held together factions through sheer force of will. His absence leaves a vacuum too vast to ignore. Friends have turned cautious; rivals have grown restless,” the Nimba lawmaker further said.
The Fight to Fill his Place
Bility spoke of what is on the lip of many, how and who fills his place, indicating that such the fight to fill his place will not be a quiet one.
He said the uneasy calm that has settled over Nimba is fragile, like a glass thread stretched too thin.
“It threatens to break at the slightest touch. His funeral, though a solemn occasion, felt like the prologue to a storm, a harbinger of the battles yet to come,” he said prophetically. “But what does it mean to truly honor a man like Prince Johnson? Is it to mimic his defiance? To perpetuate the divisions he often navigated with skill? Or is it to rise above, to find the unity he once fought for, even if it eluded him in life?”
