Piah Outlines Liberia’s Path Forward -Highlights Diplomacy, Security and Development

MONROVIA – In a comprehensive national update, Information Minister Jerolinmek Matthew Piah detailed the Boakai administration’s latest strides in governance, infrastructure, and regional security. Addressing reporters during the Ministry of Information’s regular press briefing in Monrovia, Minister Piah countered social media misinformation with hard facts, highlighting major breakthroughs in rural electrification, healthcare infrastructure, and maritime expansion, while reaffirming Liberia’s firm stance on border security and illegal mining. Information Minister Jerolinmek Matthew Piah has outlined a broad range of government priorities and achievements, addressing critical national issues including the Liberia-Guinea border situation, Ebola preparedness, illegal mining activities, rural electrification, maritime expansion, healthcare improvements, and educational developments.

Speaking Tuesday during the Ministry of Information’s regular press briefing in Monrovia, Minister Piah said the Government of Liberia has begun issuing formal public policy statements on major national concerns as part of efforts to improve public understanding of government actions and priorities.

Border Tensions and Regional Diplomacy

Addressing the ongoing border concerns involving neighboring Guinea, Minister Piah stressed that Liberia remains firmly committed to peace, sovereignty, territorial integrity, and good neighborly relations.

“The border situation must be handled strictly through dialogue, diplomacy, and established regional and international mechanisms, and not by unilateral actions or inflammatory rhetoric,” he stated.

According to him, the March 2026 tripartite meeting involving the Presidents of Liberia, Guinea, and Sierra Leone reaffirmed the commitment of all parties to resolve border-related concerns peacefully through diplomatic channels.

Piah disclosed that President Joseph Nyuma Boakai subsequently dispatched a Special Presidential Envoy to Guinea to follow up on agreements reached during the tripartite discussions and to help prepare for a proposed Mano River Union Summit expected in July.

He further revealed that President Boakai recently held discussions with Guinean President Mamady Doumbouya and Ivorian President Alassane Ouattara during the Africa Forward Summit in Nairobi, where the leaders emphasized the need for a swift and peaceful resolution of the matter.

Public Health Security and Ebola Preparedness

The Information Minister also assured Liberians that health authorities are actively monitoring Ebola outbreaks reported in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda.

He said the Ministry of Health and the National Public Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL) have heightened surveillance activities and preparedness measures to prevent any possible importation of the virus into Liberia.

According to Piah, health authorities are strengthening border screening systems, public awareness campaigns, infection prevention protocols, and rapid response mechanisms.

“The government assures the public that it is taking the matter seriously and will continue to act proactively to protect lives and preserve national health security,” he emphasized.

Crackdown on Illicit Mining

The government has meanwhile expressed serious concern over the growing incidence of illicit mining activities, particularly in Rivercess County and other parts of the country.

Piah warned that illegal mining operations are contributing to environmental degradation, lawlessness, community tensions, and the destruction of lawful governance structures.

He disclosed that joint security agencies have been instructed to take appropriate actions against individuals and groups engaged in illegal extraction of natural resources.

“The government of Liberia will not tolerate any group operating outside the law, especially where they threaten public order, undermine local authorities, or fuel illegal extraction of natural resources,” he said.

Economic and Diplomatic Growth

Liberia Poised to Become Regional U.S. Visa Hub

The Minister also commented on reports indicating that the United States Government is considering a restructuring of visa services across Africa.

Though not yet officially confirmed, Piah noted that Liberia is reportedly among approximately 20 countries expected to retain full visa processing services under the proposed arrangement.

Should the plan materialize, Monrovia could become a major regional visa processing destination, attracting visitors from neighboring countries and creating new opportunities for hotels, transportation providers, tourism operators, and related businesses.

Piah described the development as a possible reflection of Liberia’s growing international credibility, stability, and strong diplomatic relationship with the United States. He commended Foreign Minister Sara Beysolow Nyanti and President Boakai for their efforts in strengthening bilateral relations between Liberia and the United States.

Rural Electrification Projects Advance

The Minister highlighted several major projects being implemented by the Liberia Electricity Regulatory and Renewable Energy authorities aimed at expanding electricity access throughout rural Liberia.

Among the initiatives are the completion of a one-megawatt solar power plant and battery storage facility in Lofa County, the expansion of household electricity connections, the development of hydroelectric facilities in Nimba County and the deployment of thousands of solar home systems nationwide

He said the projects are expected to provide electricity access to tens of thousands of Liberians, particularly in underserved rural communities.

Maritime Registry to Gain 150 New Vessels

Piah also announced that the Liberia Maritime Authority has secured commitments for approximately 150 additional vessels to join Liberia’s international maritime registry.

The development followed high-level engagements by Liberia’s maritime leadership during the World Shipping Exhibition.

According to him, the expansion will strengthen Liberia’s position as one of the world’s leading maritime nations while creating additional employment opportunities for qualified Liberian seafarers. The move is also expected to generate increased revenue for the country and enhance Liberia’s standing within the global shipping industry.

Social Infrastructure and Human Development

Over 57,000 Students Writing WASSCE

Turning to education, the Minister disclosed that 57,391 twelfth-grade students are currently sitting the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) across 401 examination centers nationwide.

He clarified reports circulating on social media suggesting that armed police officers were stationed at examination centers. According to him, investigations revealed that images accompanying the reports were artificially generated and did not reflect conditions at examination sites.

“The examination process has proceeded positively with no major incidents reported,” he said.

The examinations are expected to conclude on June 19.

Health Infrastructure Receives Major Boost

The government also reported significant progress in the reconstruction of C.H. Rennie Hospital in Margibi County, with the project nearing completion. Piah said the upgraded facility will improve healthcare delivery and expand access to quality medical services for residents of Margibi and neighboring counties.

Additionally, he announced that the Ministry of Health has received 25 new ambulances procured by the Government of Liberia to strengthen emergency medical response services nationwide. The ambulances will be distributed across various counties to support hospitals, clinics, emergency response teams, and disease outbreak interventions.

Vocational Education Expansion

At the same time, the Ministry of Youth and Sports recently graduated more than 200 students from the Business and Domestic Occupational Training Center during its 19th graduation ceremony.

The government has pledged continued investment in technical and vocational education, with new programs in fashion design, beauty therapy, event management, tourism, and hospitality expected to be introduced. Piah said the initiative aligns with government efforts to equip young Liberians with practical skills needed for employment and entrepreneurship.

A Call for Patriotism and Responsible Public Discourse

Concluding his remarks, Minister Piah urged Liberians to support national development efforts by promoting factual information and responsible public discourse.

He criticized the growing spread of misinformation, particularly through social media platforms, warning that false narratives undermine national confidence and distract from ongoing development achievements.

The minister argued that significant progress is being made in road construction, electrification, healthcare, governance reforms, anti-corruption efforts, and infrastructure development, and called on citizens to contribute positively toward national advancement.

“What we require as a government is the full support of the citizenry in being nationalistic and patriotic about your country,” Piah declared.

He maintained that despite existing challenges, Liberia is steadily advancing under the Boakai administration and remains committed to delivering improved services and opportunities for its citizens.
