MONROVIA – The Executive Mansion has disclosed the arrival of two buses which it says are examples of 300 due to arrive in the country soon.
Although a total detailed about the buses was not disclosed on the grounds of the Executive Mansion where the Senior Political Advisor to President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Madam McDella Cooper, spoke to reporters, she notwithstanding said the advent of the buses were initial fulfillment of President Joseph Nyuma Boakai’s promise to improve social services for Liberian people.
Speaking in an interview on Monday, June 24, 2024, with Spoon TV reporter concerning the buses, Madam Cooper said, “His Excellency President JNB declared that he was going to move Liberia in the right direction for our citizens; so, this is one of the initiatives that he spoke about during his campaign and in his inaugural; here we are standing directly in front of two of several buses to arrival here in a few weeks.”
The Presidential Political Advisor said the government was not dwelling too much on donations, but to make sure the country survives on trade and services and delivering goodies to the people.
“The President is very excited to have seen the buses; he’s in a meeting that’s why he is not here with us. We all are celebrating and this is a great day for Liberia,” Madam Cooper said further.
She asserted that the Liberian people are no longer going to stand around waiting in the sun and rain for commercial bikes as the availability of the buses will remedy the transportation menace in the country, particularly Monrovia and its environs.
“More buses are coming into the country,” she said. “But these two are just samples for the people to see. That is part of 300 buses they are going to receive in the next weeks and months,” she said
According to Madam Cooper, the buses will go directly under the transport ministry to the National Transit Authority (NTA).
Also speaking to the reporter, a representative of the company, Technology Fund Africa – Marcopolo Consortium, said his organization was also financing entity that is assembling the buses together.”
“We are honored that His Excellency the President has invited us to assist in delivering on his promise and we promised that we will not let him down,” he said. “We are delivering on the first part of the promise and the second and third parts of the promise are coming shortly.”
According to the Marcopolo Consortium representative, within the next couple of months, “you will be seeing more of these buses in the streets. These buses are very economical, and friendly for the environment even for the handicapped.”
He explained that his entity is going to include all the sectors where there are handicapped taxis, wheelchairs, and ramps, indicating further that there are spaces in there for the handicapped and that they secured in terms of having security cameras, security features; besides he furthered that they are saved and also have technology to on them ensure that the drivers conduct themselves appropriately”.
The businessman intimated that the buses are easy to get into and out, which is good for physically challenged and older people.
“But we are not just providing buses,” he added. “We are also providing assistance consisting of buses for shelters, and ticketing like connect-ticketing where you can pay with your mobile money and no one can essentially hold down the process because it is very fast.”
He continued: “You can get in much faster; no more fumbling for change; no more having revenue lost from intakes received. Indeed, the government is moving very positively in the right direction.”
He then noted that the business is a joint venture, a partnership between the people of Liberia, company and partners, “and I don’t want to go into all the details yet”,
