MONROVIA – Bomi County Senator and Liberia’s trendiest opposition lawmaker Edwin Melvin Snowe has been hitting the headlines lately. For the right or wrong reasons, Senator Snowe has been battling to clarify statements he made on Spoon Talk Live show in April where among other things, as a leading opposition figure in the current political dispensation, he unequivocally wished for the opposition to succeed the ruling Unity Party at the polls in 2029, arguing that failure on the part of the Boakai administration to meet the expectations of the citizenry will lead to the ouster of the Unity Party at the next presidential elections. Snowe’s statement has stirred a hornet’s nest of acrimonious backlash from the ruling establishment, thus compelling him to complain the Ministry of Information to his colleague senators over a recent MICAT press statement that accused the Bomi County lawmaker and ECOWAS parliamentarian of subversive inclinations bordering on treasonous destabilization of the Boakai-led government. The Analyst reports.
According to Senator Snowe, in April of this year, he appeared on the Spoon Talk Show and spoke about a lot of things. “We gave the government a tap on the back where it was necessary, we expressed our criticism where it was deemed fit. And we were asked a specific question: do you think the government is performing? And we said, ‘not up to expectations’. And we further said that when we voted for Mr. Weah in 2023, something in our subconscious told us that if Mr. Boakai won the election, we will still have a better Liberia because Mr. Boakai comes with a rich governmental experience.
“Then he asked: ‘do you think his performance is meeting expectations?’ I said I don’t believe it’s up to expectation. We talked about the issue in the House of Representatives. We talked about the tenured positions. We talked about other issues. Then I further said, if he fails, if he doesn’t do well, I pray he fails; then it means he will only have one term, then we will move them from power,” Senator Snowe clarified in a recent press briefing after he complained the Ministry of Information over an incendiary press statement.
Further clarifying, Senator Snowe said if the government or the public feels that the statement is against the interest of Liberia, he is willing to sit down and discuss the statement. “I am a human being. Yes, I want the government to have one term. I am not going to back off from there. But if my statement by saying fail and people construing it as I want the government not to provide basic services, then we can look at it.
“Today, I was just in the Pro Tempore’s office, taking photographs supporting Liberia’s bid for the UN Security seat. Do I want the government to succeed itself after six years? No. I want it to be a one term government. If that means destabilization, then I am guilty. But I was shocked,” Senator Snowe lamented, noting that he is prepared to give up his ECOWAS representation position if that is what the current fight against his person is all about.
Is Snowe being persecuted because of his ECOWAS seat?
As political pundits continue to scratch their heads over the rising wave of vitriol emanating from the ruling establishment in reaction to Senator Snowe’s Spoon Talk statement, the Bomi County lawmaker himself has left little to the imagination regarding the main reason behind the government’s acrimonious backlash. According to Snowe, the government of Liberia has hatched a plan to remove him from the ECOWAS parliament, and have decided to hide behind his utterances as an opposition lawmaker.
“When former Vice President Boakai attended the “Weah Step Down Campaign”, I don’t think it was intended for Weah to succeed and be a second term president. It was for him to step down then or for him to have one term – which was Mr. Boakai’s right under our democracy. There will always be dissent. We can either agree to change the form of government or we can have a democratic form of government. We will disagree; we will always disagree. But should we do it for love of country? Yes, we should. And I want to reiterate that my love for this country is unquestionable. I want Liberians to succeed,” Snowe reiterated, but added strongly that as an opposition he wants for the Boakai administration to be one-termed.
“I stand by my statement,” Snowe added vehemently.
