The Liberian Vice President Chief Dr. Jewel Howard-Taylor made a tour to two significant institutions on February 6, 2019 in Margibi where she visited the Christian Aid Ministries (CAM) on Tower Hill, and the Monrovia Football Academy (MFA) in Careysburg, Montserrado County; The Analyst’s John Dennis Weah, Jr. reports.
The Vice President, accompanied by some of her staff and an array of journalists, visited the two areas based on invitations extended her by the two respective institutions in order to have an insight of their functions and works.
Vice President Taylor and entourage were welcomed and received at the institutions triumphantly by the administrations and staffs of both institutions.
Receiving the Vice President at the first stop at the Christian Aid Ministries in Margibi, the Country Director of the institution, Mr. Paul Yoder lauded the VP Taylor for the visit and said his organization is involved with giving hope to less fortunate people through its General Relief Program, which includes giving hope to the blind, the physically challenged, the disadvantaged women and youths, amongst others. He expressed gratitude to the government for the level of improved road networks; which he mentioned has enabled them to reach their many beneficiaries in difficult terrains across Liberia and even more as far as the improvement of roads is concerned.
Mr. Yoder disclosed the works of his organization by outlining the six basic programs which involves the General Relief, Orphan Sponsorship, Medical Distribution, including the Agricultural/Seed Distribution, Hope for the Handicapped and Special Needs, he said.
Mr. Yoder also explained that the organization began its works in Liberia in 1999 and noted that the group assisted with the repatriation and resettlement of returnees to Liberia at the end of the Liberian Civil Crisis. Since then, CAM has been involved with the peace and development agenda of the country among other activities.
In remarks, Vice President Taylor applauded the efforts being made by CAM and noted that her visit was intended to acquaint her office with the works of the Christian Aid Ministries. On behalf of the government, she expressed satisfaction with the programs of the group and committed the government to working with the group in achieving its objectives.
VP Taylor and team were taken on a guided tour of CAM’s facility on Tower Hill on the Robertsfield Highway to visualize basic supplied materials kept in the storehouse. Some of the relief materials seen were medicines, agriculture implements, food and non-food items etc. She was impressed and highly commended the group for their efforts in support of the government Pro-poor policy and its people.
On the second leg of the visit in Careysburg at the Monrovia Football Academy, Montserrado County, the Vice President Howard-Taylor was also received by the administration and trainees of the MFA. In his welcome remarks, the Co-founder of the MFA, Sir DGeorges Manubah, disclosed that the academy was started in October 2015, and noted that since then the doors of the institution have been opened to train young talented athletes, mainly in football for both male and female.
The VP was hailed by Mr. Manubah and his staff on the compound of the MFA for her kind contributions and gesture in support of development initiatives. He said though the MFA is in full swing, the continuation of its operational needs required support from the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Liberia Football Association.
Sir Manubah however spoke highly of the operation of the institution, but added that it is under budgeted to do all that are expected in its programs. He stressed that quality education and professional football development in Liberia start from the work of the academy, and require partnership as well.
For her part, Vice President Taylor encouraged the entire administrative team of the MFA to continue their good works and keep focus. She said her visit was in twofold, firstly to have interaction with the trainees and secondly to form part of the great family of the MFA.
VP Taylor also assured that President George Manneh Weah who himself is a soccer legend and a grassroots personality would love to pay a visit at the academy to appreciate the level of work done at the MFA by training the Liberian youths to become competitive in soccer.
Commending the works of the administration for its improvement at the academy, VP Taylor encouraged the athletics to seize the opportunities and do their best during their training period.
“My visit here is to showcase what is happening at the Monrovia Football Academy” she told the cheering trainees and administrators.
Vice President Taylor made a donation of 15 high quality footballs to the administration of MFA. In making the presentation of the footballs, the VP took one of the footballs and presented it to the smallest male trainee who she figured out in a special case.
She narrated her experience about the little ones because, according to her, she was once a child and understands what those below the level of their peers encountered during practice time.
“Sometimes when they are playing, they will ask you to step aside and wait”, therefore I am presenting this football to you personally, the VP told the minor.
During her stay at the football facility in Careysburg, she toured other administrative sites including the dormitory. The visit was climaxed by a match between the male and female teams that ended up with a victory in favor of the young female team in final penalty kicks.
