MONROVIA – The resident Bishop of the Liberia Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church, Samuel J. Quire, has clarified rising public insinuations that gay marriage and homosexuality activities have been taking place in the church, adding the United Methodist Church is not a Gay Church.

Speaking at a news conference yesterday, in Monrovia, Bishop Samuel Quire clarified: “It is imperative to clarify that our Church is not a gay Church, nor will it ever adopt such an identity. “We, as members of the United Methodist Church in Liberia, firmly uphold the definition of marriage as a sacred union between one man and one woman nothing more and nothing less.”

Bishop Quire emphasized that “this belief is deeply rooted in our interpretation of biblical teachings, our cultural values, and our shared commitment to upholding marriage as a union between a man and a woman.”

Addressing the situation that occurred at the New Georgia and 72 United Methodist Churches on Sunday, Bishop Quire said it was “mere rumours that I the Bishop of the United Methodist Church was going to perform same-sex marriage at the New George United Methodist Church.”

“Due to these rising situations, the Inspector General of Police Gregory Coleman who happened to be a United Methodists was concerned about the situation and called me today for a meeting,” he said.

“After the IG made statement on behalf of the state, he excused the rest of the people and said let us discuss United Methodist issue. We discussed that the United Methodist Church is not a gay church, the United Methodist Church will not never practice any gay wedding or ordain people who are gay.”
