MONROVIA – It seems the University of Liberia’s age-old registration ghost, adorned with chaos and procrastination, has once again returned. There was a noticeable lull for a reasonable time when digital platforms and free college education were enunciated by the erstwhile CDC regime—and the public was spared battle cries and stone throwing, and students pursued academic programs relatively smoothly. It is not clear if conditions that underpinned such an ease have been clawed away by the new administration. What is clear however is that the same old rowdy agitations for delayed registration and associated costly noises on Capitol Hill are about to re-bellow, and the Senate Committee on Education is taking steps to prevent eventualities. The Analyst reports.

In a communication dated August 28, 2025 and addressed to Dr. Layli Maparyan, President of the University of Liberia, the Senate Committee on Education and Public Administration is calling for a two-week extension of student registration on the current academic semester.

The Committee said its appeal was necessitated by “several representations from the student body indicating that a significant number of students are currently constrained by financial and logistical challenges that have hampered their ability to complete the ongoing registration process within the stipulated timeframe”.

It has been a couple of years now since complaints of late or slow registration of UL students were heard in the country, particularly following the introduction of digital registration platforms and free college education over the UL declared by the government of the Coalition for Democratic Change.

The Senate Committee said in light of the prevailing constraints faced by the students, “we respectfully request that the University grant an extension of at least two week period.

“This extension will ensure that all students have adequate opportunity to regularize their status and fully participate in the semester’s academic activities,” the Senate Committee head of Margibi County Senator Nathaniel McGill said. “Additionally, in line with our oversight responsibilities, we request that the university submit its draft budget for this academic year to the committee.”

According to the Committee, this would engage it review the proposed allocations, provide constructive input, and advocate for increased funding where necessary to support the university’s mission and enhance the quality of education for all students.

“The committee trust your urgent attention to this appeal and remains available for constructive engagement in support of the University,” the McGill-headed committee concluded.
