STAND Wants Swift, Impartial Investigation for Capitol Hill Fire -Calls on Govt. to Seek US Govt Assistance into Investigation
MONROVIA – Hot on the heels of experiencing traumatic clashes between officers of the Liberian National Police and a group of protestors on Capitol Hill yesterday Tuesday, a scenario that brought back memories of the country’s dark past, Liberians were awakened this morning to a disturbing scene of uncontrollable fire and bellowing smoke from the edifice of the Capitol Building. In reaction to the horrific fire incident at the Capitol Building, the Solidarity and Trust for a New Day (STAND) is calling on the Government of Liberia to immediately empanel an impartial and thorough investigation backed by the United States Government into the tragic Capitol fire, The Analyst reports.
Making its position known in a December 18, 2024 press statement, STAND notes that the devastating fire that ravaged the Capitol Building this morning demands an immediate and thorough investigation to determine its cause, assess the full extent of the damage, and hold those responsible accountable, should it be found deliberate.
“This tragedy must not remain unresolved; swift action is essential to uphold public trust. Therefore, we urge authorities, with the full backing of the U.S. government and development partners, to act swiftly.
“The destruction of taxpayer-funded property must not be left in the shadows of uncertainty. Whether deliberate or spontaneous, violence is never an acceptable option!” STAND stated emphatically, while calling on the government to treat the matter with the utmost urgency and as a national emergency.
Boakai Visits Burnt Capitol Building
As firemen fought bravely and relentlessly to douse the conflagration, President Jospeh Nyuma Boakai visited the tragic scene where he briefly met with Vice President Jeremiah Koon, members of the Majority Bloc and other lawmakers on the lawns of the Capitol Building. After that meeting President Boakai promised to immediately launch an impartial investigation into the fire incident, and further assured that nothing will impede his government’s development agenda.
Koffa’s “The Alamo” Post
Amidst the controversies that erupted following news of the fire outbreak at the Capitol Building early Wednesday morning, social media went abuzz over a post that was alleged made by embattled Speaker J. Fonati Koffa.
“THE ALAMO” Cllr. Koffa had cryptically posted yesterday, which he would admit to deleting today when he was queried by a close friend within the legal circle.
As sentiments flared, many critics placed the blame of the fire on Cllr. Koffa and his supporters from the legislature, including Representative Yekeh Korlubah of Montserrado County District #10 and Rep. Saah Foko of Montserrado County District # 9, attempting to link Speaker Koffa’s “Alamo” post with today’s fire incident.
“Remember the Alamo!” is perhaps one of the most famous battle cries in American history. It’s derived from the Battle of the Alamo in San Antonio, Texas, on March 6, 1836.
The battle has been immortalized as a turning point in American history and for involving a number of men who have since become legends in their own right, including Davy Crockett and Jim Bowie.
The commonly accepted version of facts and events of the Battle of the Alamo is that a handful of brave (and heavily outnumbered) English-speaking Anglo-Saxon American rebels (called Texians) defended Fort Alamo near San Antonio.
The Alamo was originally a Catholic mission built for converting Mesoamerican Indians near San Antonio, nicknamed by Spanish cavalry members.
In 1836, a battle at the Alamo symbolized the Texan and Tejano fight for independence against Mexican forces led by General Santa Ana.
The Battle of the Alamo became legendary, inspiring rebels to continue fighting and ultimately contributing to Texas’ independence.
The expression “remember the Alamo” is most often used as a battle cry, a way to convey strength and honor in three succinct words.
