MONROVIA – The government of Liberia through several State-owned Enterprises has launched a Short-Term Youth Empowerment Project in Montserrado County.
The initiative is sponsored by seven SOEs that include the Liberia Petroleum Refraining Company (LPRC), National Social Security &Welfare Corporation (NASSCORP), National Port Authority (NPA), Liberia Maritime Authority (LiMA), Liberia Telecommunications Authority (LTA), Central Bank of Liberia (CBL), and the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC) to enhance youth empowerment.
Speaking at the launching ceremony on Wednesday, February 26, 2025 in Paynesville outside Monrovia, the Senior Economic Advisor to President Boakai, Morley P. Kamara said youth employment is essential for the government.
According to him, President Boakai has taken keen interest in empowering the young people of Liberia.
“The President has developed interest in this youth development initiative,” he said.
For her part, Georgette Gray, Deputy Business Manager in the Office of the President of the Republic of Liberia, said the State Owned Enterprises’ Short-Term Youth Empowerment Project is an initiative of seven SOE that is brainstormed and masterminded by the Managing Director of LPRC with the endorsement of President Boakai.
According to Madam Gray, the SOE short-term project is aimed at targeting youth unemployment and fostering community development.
“The short-term youth empowerment program will not only provide critical job experience for the youth, but also serves as the bedrock for enhancing youth participation in the Country’s development progress, with plans to extend this initiative to other State Owned Enterprises,” she explained.
Giving the overview of the project, Madam Georgette Gray said the goal of this project is to ensure it becomes a nationwide effort.
Making remarks, the Managing Director of the Liberia Petroleum Refraining Company (LPRC), Amos B Tweh, said the youth empowerment project is a short-term initiative that is being designed consistent with the vision of President Boakai agenda to empower the young people of Liberia.
Tweah said he was glad that the President placed the promotion and empowerment of young people at the top of his agenda, and that public sector institutions particularly the category of State Owned Enterprises has joined the President in his efforts to create different kinds of initiatives to provide empowerment opportunity for young people.
This initiative is about how national government can continue to support these kinds of initiatives for the purpose of enhancing community development and the young people.
“The contextual framework for this program is going to be structured such that by July to December, we going to have young people engaged across the different communities,” he said.
Giving the vote of thanks, the Head of Secretariat of the SOE Short-term Empowerment Project, Teklo Maxwell Grigsby said there are 1,600 beneficiaries in two months due to the size of the budget.
“So we intend to do the first 800 people beginning Monday, the 3rd of March to the 31st of March, and the second 800 for April and this is because of the limited funds,” he disclosed.
“With the record we have so far shows that we have received the entrance of over 6,000 applications for 800 slots,” he said. “Due to our bank balances, we can not afford to do 1,600 in March, so we are spending judiciously and consciously. If we have our bank balance improved, the numbers will increase. There will be no third party payment. Payment will be made by International Bank (IB).”
Grigsby added: “The payroll is approved we sent it to the steering committee, if reviewed, verified and send to the bank for direct deposit to mobile money register in the name of the applicant.
