MONROVIA – The Liberian Senate has taken decisive action to address lingering questions surrounding the December 18, 2024, fire that ravaged the joint chambers of the Capitol Building, by endorsing a communication from Gbarpolu County Senator Amara M. Konneh.
In his letter to Senate President Pro Tempore Nyomblee Kangar-Lawrence, Senator Konneh formally requested that the Ministry of Justice, the Liberia National Police, and the Liberia Fire Service appear before the Senate to provide a comprehensive update on the fire investigation.
“The Capitol Building, our workplace, suffered significant damage from that fire, and it is crucial that we address this matter urgently,” Konneh stated, emphasizing the need to reassure constituents who remain concerned about the cause of the fire.
While acknowledging the complexity of fire investigations, Senator Konneh noted that five months should have been sufficient to determine whether the incident was caused by an electrical fault or deliberate arson. “Our constituents and all of us in this Legislature are entitled to the facts,” he added.
The Senate plenary endorsed the communication following a motion by Bong County Senator Prince K. Moye. However, no specific date has yet been set for the appearance of the requested institutions.
The December fire forced legislative operations to relocate and sparked public speculation, which lawmakers hope to quell with a transparent update from the appropriate authorities.
This move marks a renewed push for accountability and the safe restoration of the Capitol’s damaged joint chambers.
