Sen. Lawrence Pledges to Champion Diaspora Agenda -Affirms Legislative Agenda to Engage Stakeholders
MONROVIA – Senate President Pro Tempore Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence has outlined a roadmap to deepen the existing bonds between the global Liberian diaspora community and the government of Liberia.
Recognizing the diaspora community as a reservoir of talent, investment, advocacy, and patriotic commitment, Pro Tempore Lawrence pledged to champion a comprehensive Diaspora Engagement Agenda.
Speaking at the September 26-28 Liberia Diaspora Annual Conference in Washington, DC, Pro Tempore Lawrence highlighted key legislative priorities, including institutionalizing dual citizenship rights, establishing a Diaspora Advisory Council, and holding ministries accountable for diaspora programs; removing barriers to diaspora-led investments through tax reforms, startup support, and a transparent Diaspora Investment Fund, and legislating university collaborations and incentivizing the return of diaspora professionals to serve in public institutions.
She also outscore need for strengthening legal protections for returning diaspora Liberians, including land rights, reintegration, and dispute resolution; providing continuous legislative engagement and ensuring diaspora voices are heard year-round, and enabling diaspora voting and clarifying their eligibility for public office.
Pro Tempore Lawrence emphasized the importance of national unity and reconciliation, promoting inclusive dialogues, healing historical divisions, and building a Liberia that welcomes all its sons and daughters.
“The time for symbolic engagement is over. It is time for action,” she said, inviting the diaspora to partner with the Senate in building a stronger, more inclusive Republic.
The Liberia Diaspora Conference (LDC) is a key event that strengthens the bond between Liberians living abroad and their homeland.
This year’s conference, held under the theme “Better Together”, which coincided with the 80th Anniversary of the United Nations and featured a who’s who list of dignitaries, including Liberian government officials, members of the diplomatic community, and Liberians from around the world.
