Nearly a fortnight ago, Liberian journalists elected a new corps of leaders ending nearly two years of inertia and dormancy triggered by disputes over electoral results. And during that period of dormancy, even the once lavishly celebrated anniversary of the journalists’ umbrella organization, the Press Union of Liberia (PUL), was downplayed. Thus, on the eve of the 60th Anniversary, specifically September 30, barely days after the elections of new leaders, and amid bad blood amongst members and groups of members flowing from the electoral process, the President-Elect released his anniversary statement, accentuating the exigency of healing, unity and loyalty. THE ANALYST reports.
The President-Elect of the Press Union of Liberia, Julius Kanubah, has made a passionate plea to journalists and media workers to renew their commitment and loyalty to the PUL and the practice of professional, responsible, ethical journalism.
Kanubah says when journalists are loyal to the PUL, which is a fraternal institution that prides itself as a public information and integrity organization, there will be professional solidarity that binding them together never to be compromised or sacrificed for selfish ends.
A release from the office of the PUL president-elect quotes him as saying that he wants journalists, media and communication workers to deeply reflect over the current state of the PUL with the view to advancing constructive suggestions to move the PUL and journalism forward.
“In our reflection,” Kanubah said, “journalists and media workers must consider the imperative of realizing improved working condition and professional integrity in the service of journalism and media in Liberia.”
He pledged that the newly elected leadership would work collectively to bring back credibility, integrity and dignity to the PUL through the implementation of a well-defined agenda, focusing on accountable leadership; impartial advocacy; construction of the PUL Headquarters; support for women in journalism; inclusive and sustainable media development; and the formation of media hubs in the Counties for journalists.
Kanubah observed that the Union’s 60th anniversary could not have come at an important time as the PUL is in the process of a historical democratic transition after nearly two years of leadership paralysis.
President-Elect Kanubah assured that the PUL new leadership team is working with the Interim Committee (IC) to induct the democratically elected officers in keeping with the Ruling of the Ninth Judicial Circuit Court in Gbarnga, Bong County.
The IC, led by PUL former President Peter Quaqua, must be commended for the high-level of integrity, diligence, and commitment demonstrated in ensuring that a legitimate leadership is elected and installed to restore the PUL, he said.
The Quaqua-led IC comprises some of the best moral guardians of the media and society, namely, Elizabeth Hoff, James Kiazolu, Frank Sainworla, Winston Monboe, Teah Doegmah, Weade Kobbah-Boley, Malcolm Joseph, Helen Nah-Sammie, Peter Kahler, and Jacob Parley.
