PUL Constitutes Four Permanent Committees -36 Prominent Members Take Appointments

MONROVIA – The leadership of the Press Union of Liberia (PUL) has constituted four of five Permanent Committees of the Union, with the appointments of a diverse and competent team of 36 distinguished Liberian journalists, media and communication professionals.

Making the appointment in consonance with the Constitution of the Union, PUL President Julius Kanubah said that the appointments aim to activate and enhance the effective and inclusive governance of the PUL after years of institutional paralysis.

Kanubah expressed delight that the PUL is steadily being restored, applauding those appointed for agreeing to make their services available to the Union in these crucial times of institutional restoration.

The PUL President admonished those appointed to serve with distinction, integrity, and dignity, urging them to take their appointments as one of the highest honors and callings in the service and interest of the PUL and the integrity of journalism, media and communication.

The following encompasses the list of the constituted Permanent Committees and the respective appointees:

Membership Committee

Article 15 Section 2 Mandate: The duties of the Membership Committee shall be to receive and screen all applicants for membership to the Union consistent with the PUL Constitution, and conduct membership drives when necessary. Members shall be made to sign a behavior bond.

Intellectual Discourse Committee

Article 15 Section 3 Mandate: The duties of the IDC shall be: (a) To organize various activities that promote and cultivate goodwill and understanding among members and between the Union and the public; (b) To organize lectures and talk shows for the benefit and improvement of relations with its members and the public, including the production of the PUL official newsletter and magazine; and (c) To organize social and educational activities in and out of the country.

Welfare Committee

Article 15 Section 6 Mandate: The duties of the Welfare Committee shall be as follows: (a) Monitor the general working conditions of members of the Union and make recommendations on such things like salaries, retirement schemes, insurance and other benefits offered by the media employers as stipulated in a duly executed collective bargaining agreement between the Union and such employers; (b) Put in place an effective health and welfare scheme for members of the Union.

Article 15 Section 7 Mandate: The Sports and Entertainment Committee shall be responsible to: (a) Organize and execute all sporting activities within the Union and between the Union and other institutions; (b) Organize entertainment and recreational activities for members of the Union as often as necessary to ensure social harmony and cohesion within the Union and with other professional and civic organizations.

Together, the 36 Liberian journalists, media and communication professionals bring together over three decades of outstanding work and solid education credentials, along with a strong reputation of professionalism, credibility, excellence, and impartiality.

Importantly, all appointed Chairpersons automatically qualify to serve on the Executive Committee, which is the second highest decision-making body of the Union next to Congress.

The PUL leadership is committed to working with the Permanent Committees to initiate and institutionalize policy reforms to strengthen the PUL.

In the coming days, the PUL leadership will announce the next set of appointments to affect the Standing Committee on Grievance and Ethics, which was transformed into the National Media Council; the Constitution Review Committee; the Special Project Committee for the Construction of PUL Headquarters; and other ad-hoc Committees as well as the leadership of the PUL subchapters in the Counties and Regions.
