PLP condemns “Vicious and Barbaric attack” Against SUP -Slams Govt, Calls for Investigation

In the wake of the travails being subjected to the Student Unification Party of the University of Liberia by the CDC COP on Tuesday, July 26, 2022, the People’s Liberation Party (PLP)  says it stands in solidarity with the campus based group for their patriotic stance on many critical national issues, while  vehemently condemning “the vicious and barbaric attack meted out against peaceful and harmless protesters by state sponsored auxiliary group called CDC-COP in front of the United States embassy in Monrovia on July 26, 2022” and called upon the Independent National Commission on Human Rights(INCHR) and the Liberia National Police(LNP) to take seize of the matter by launching a speedy investigation..

In a press statement from the party and signed by Tapple E. Doe, National Chairman, the party said peaceful assembly is a fundamental right guaranteed and protected under article 17 of the 1986 constitution which states that all persons, at all times, in an orderly and peaceable manner, shall have the right to assemble and consult upon the common good, to instruct their representatives, to petition the government or other functionaries for the redress of grievances.  It said the protesters most of whom are students and members of the Vanguard Student Unification Party (SUP) of the state-run university of Liberia, being cognizant of this constitutional provision, assembled peacefully and orderly in front of the US Embassy in an effort to claim the attention of the American government of the misrule, bad governance, corruption, dependent judiciary deeply entrenched in the George weah led government.

“Distressingly, CDC-COP, a state sponsored auxiliary group, was heard chanting “weah is fixing the state” at the same time seen parading with a banner carrying the photograph of president weah as opposed to “fix the country” slogan of the peaceful protesters.

“It can be recalled, when financially induced elements of the Council of Patriot (COP), a pressure group that staged the “Save The State” June 7 protest defected to join the congress for democratic change, were received with open arms by the CDC led government. Today it is clear that the only reason they were financially induced to defect from the COP, is to be used as attack dogs.

“We have gathered that Christopher Sivili, George Darsaw, Abraham Nulah, David Howard, Paul Dolo, Charles Howard, Stephen Brown are students amongst those who were severely beaten and brutalized whilst students Sylvester Weelor, Prince Whamah and Abraham Kallon were arrested and are in the custody of the Liberia National Police (LNP).

The release further said that the PLP called  for the unconditional release of those students behind bars, ensure proper medical treatment for those who were brutalized and expeditiously investigate the barbarism by bringing to justice perpetrators especially those who are seen in the video brutalizing and demeaning defenseless and peaceful protesters.

“According to the CIA FACT SHEET, Liberians from 0 – 24 years constitutes 63.7% (2022 est.) of the population – a percentage that constitutes a significant portion of the country’s total population of 5,358,483 (2022 est.). This statistic indicates that Liberia as a country has a youthful population. As such, the focus of this government must be to ensure that the needs and aspirations of such youthful population is protected and met when call upon and not to result to unleashing hoodlums and thugs to brutalize and demean them when they choose to consult upon their government for redress of grievances.

“We are fast approaching the electioneering period. Unleashing thugs to brutalize students who had peacefully assembled to protest is no good sign for the future of our dear country”, the statement concluded.
