MONROVIA – Bona, a town sitting at the foot of Mount Yuelliton, is now accessible to vehicles and motorcycles after years of inaccessibility.
The bridges along the road have been completed with the use of the 20% social development fund provided by ArcelorMittal Liberia for community development with the acquiescence of the legislators and the Project Management Committee of Nimba.
Despite building those bridges, the road was not accessible to vehicles still, except motorcycles that found their way along the footpath that farmers and travellers used, until AML Infrastructure team intervened by deploying its road equipment to improve the situation.
Vehicles now go to the town to transport plantain and other farm produce to the market, to the delight of Town Chief Erickson Flomo and his community residents.
The intervention began in 2024 June with the clearing of the roadsides and grading the main stretch from T-Gate in Yekepa to Lugbehyee and onward to Bona, but the rehabilitation work could not reach the town (Bona) at that time due to the lack of the bridge nearby.
The infrastructure team, after the festive season, recommenced the work and reached the town.
“We are happy for the road to reach here. Now cars can come to Bona to get goods, and we can move quickly on motorbikes when we want to. I want to thank ArcelorMittal for the relationship that has started, and we hope to continue,” said Town Chief Flomo.
He explained that the improved condition of the road enhances their safety and is helping to prevent road accidents and other security risks.
The Town Chief sees the intervention as a new dawn in the relationship between AML and Bona Town, which he said they will nurture and sustain. In doing this, Mr. Flomo said they will help protect ArcelorMittal Liberia’s operations and cautioned youth in the area against acts that undermine the presence of the company.
The public relation stunt by Arcelor Mittal with the support of some media institutions is not helping our people and country . I see so many PR being done by the company to attract support from locals, the people of Liberia and government amidst massive exploitation of our resources without potential and sustainable future benefits to the community and the country. As an emerging environmental practitioner ” that infested dusty road” is not environmentally friendly and its lifespan will sooner or later washed away as we enter the rainy season. The dust as pollution will lead to cardiovascular diseases that will affect the heath and well-being of the people within that vicinity and the Liberian People in general who ply that road on a daily basis. The second concern the company and the government should think about value added mechanism that’s by constructing a manufacturing plant to transform the IRON ORE into finished product that will create more job opportunities for young people because not everyone will have a government job opportunity; let us remember that in the past companies came and left without direct sustainable benefits to the country the case of Bomi Hills that’s now BOMI HOLE…..Are we attempting to create another NIMBA HOLE if AML shall leave tomorrow????…let together ponder on this and put the country first. The next concern is what’s the direct support of the company Arcelor Mittal to the biggest referral hospital in the county I mean the Jackson Fiah Doe’s Medical Hospital ?? In my mind that hospital is gradually being abandoned by the only mineral exploitation company in the county called Arcelor Mittal and that is being done with reckless disregard to th health well-being of the citizens and the Liberian People; all in the name of getting royalty and budgetary support ….Are we really serious as a country…??? The recent expansion by the company led to severe land degradation and potential biodiversity loss with reckless disregard for ecological and environmental protection which is international protocols and regulations and some of us being sensitive to these international statues and come what may Arcelor Mittal will give account its investment agreement with Liberia it could be locally and it could be internationally.
LET PROTECT OUR ENVIRONMENT; CLIMATE CHANGE IS REAL.
