Nigerian, 35, Gets 7 Years for Heroin Possession

MONROVIA – The 15th Judicial Circuit Court in River Gee County has sentenced a 35-year-old Nigerian national, KC Hope Ezechuku, to seven years in prison for the possession of over 36 grams of heroin, valued at $4,500.

The court proceedings unfolded on February 24, 2025, under the watchful eye of Judge Cllr. Wesseh Alphonsus Wesseh, with the trial attracting considerable attention from both local residents and law enforcement officials.

According to reports, Ezechuku, who was arrested by the LDEA on November 29, 2024, in the popular gold mining camp of Tarpoline village, Tienpo Statutory District, River Gee County, during an operation targeting drug-related offense.

During the trial, Defendant Ezechuku pleaded guilty to the charges, for been in possession of heroin and kush, all valued at USD4, 500.

As a result of his voluntary confession to the crime, the Presiding Judge, His Honor Wesseh Alphonsus Wesseh, handed down the seven-year prison term, after a presentence hearing  and he will serve his sentence at the National Palace of Corrections in Zwedru, Grand Gedeh County.

The sentence was greeted with widespread approval from residents of River Gee County, who have praised the court for its swift and firm decision.

Many expressed the hope that such a ruling would serve as a deterrent for others who may be involved in drug trafficking, reinforcing the county’s commitment to combating the growing issue of drug abuse and trafficking in Liberia.

Local leaders and citizens have emphasized that the justice system’s role in addressing drug-related offenses is critical in ensuring the safety and well-being of communities across the country.

As the case closed, the community is left reflecting on the importance of vigilance and strong legal actions in curbing the dangers posed by illicit drugs, particularly heroin, which has caused devastating harm to many lives in Liberia.
