NEC Commences Nimba Representative By-election Nomination Process

MONROVIA – The electoral body of Liberia, the National Elections Commission (NEC) has on Mnday, June 23, 2025, begins candidates nomination process for the Nimba County electoral district #5 Representatives bye-elections.

Speaking at a press conference yesterday, at the NEC 9th Street Headquarters in Sinkor, NEC boss Davidetta Browne-Lassanah said, “On behalf of all of us at the National Elections Commission we declare the nomination for district #5 Representative By-elections in Nimba County officially commence.”

 According to the National Elections Chairperson, the nomination process starts June 23, 2025 to July 4, 2025.

She noted that the date for the Nimba County Representative bye-elections is the 4th August 2025, and the key activities for the by-election like all other elections is the nomination process

The NEC boss said they have recorded 21 precincts, of which there are 69 polling places for total registered voters of 29,823 with some 374 temporary staffs to be back up by the staff of NEC.

It can be recalled that the Commission received on May 26, 2025 a notice to conduct representative by-elections in district #5 Nimba County to fill in the seat made vacant by former representaives now Senator Samuel Kogar.

“Since we received the notice, planning for district #5 Representative by-elections is ongoing,” the NEC boss further said. “To date, a proposed budget of USD$276,444.01 has being submitted to the Legislature and timelines and key dates for the conduct of activities for this by-election have been published.”

She indicated that the writ of elections has already been issued and the Commission was about set to conduct this by-election while “we pursue the approval of the budget”.

For his part, the Director of Political Affairs at the NEC, Ignatius Wesseh, said the nomination process runs in two basic phases: the first one is to allow political parties and independent candidates to come and receive their package for the by-election, meaning those who have the intention to contest as an aspirant for the election would come and pick up their packages.

The Nimba County Bye-election was created as a result of election of the former district #5 lawmaker Samuel G. Kogar to the Senate following the death of former Nimba County political godfather Prince Y Johnson.
