The National elections Commission last evening began the announcement of the provisional results of the Montserrado County Senatorial and District #15 Representative elections, putting the Collaborating Parties’ Darius Dillon and the Coalition for Democratic Change, CDC’s Abu Kamara in the leads of the upper and lower Houses’ respective contests.
According to the provisional results, Dillon has 53.88% representing 53,270 votes while Paulita CC Wie lingers behind Dillon with 36.95% representing 36,531 votes.
For the race to the District #15 seat at the House of Representatives, Abu Kamara of the CDC snatched 45.95% representing 5,515 votes while Telia Urey of the Collaborating Parties got 37.89% representing 4,548 votes.
In a Press statement while announcing the first provisional results for the July 29, 2019 for Montserrado County Senatorial and District # 15 Representative By-elections Wednesday, July 31, 2019, NEC Chairman Jerome G. Korkoya, said the by-elections were successfully implemented without any major incident.
He narrated that polls were opened in most places on time and the counting of votes started immediately on Tuesday July 30, 2019 at the Headquarters National Elections Commission’s tally center and has progressed much faster.
“Consistent with its transparency requirement, the Commission is pleased to inform you that all Political Party Agents, Independent Candidates Representatives, local and International Observers and the Media were allowed to witness the sorting, reconciliation, and counting of votes at all polling places across the Montserrado County,” Cllr. Korkoyah said.
The result from each polling place, he explained, was placed on the wall for public viewing; and added. Additionally, copies of the results place given to party representatives of the two highest vote getters at every polling place.
Thereafter, the original copies of results from each polling place were placed in a Tamper Evident Envelope for delivery to the NEC tally center for processing, the NEC Chairman pointed out.
Congratulating all registered voters that turned out to vote in the combined Montserrado County Senatorial and District # 15 Representatives By-elections, Cllr. Korkoyah hailed the patriotism and good deportment they exhibited during the elections. “We thanked the Government of Liberia for providing the funding required for the conduct of the combined by-elections,” he said.
The Chairman Korkoyah further expressed heartfelt thanks to Commissioner Jonathan Weedor, Chair of the By-elections Steering Committee, Madam Emma Togba, and Deputy Executive Director for operations, for everything they did to ensure the success of the elections while at the same time appreciating the Liberian National Police and the Joint Security Forces for helping to provide the enabling environment needed for the conduct of the combined by-elections.
“To our International Partners, observers groups and the media, we sincerely appreciate your roles and are grateful for your involvement throughout the process,” he said.
Regarding complaints and dispute resolution, Chairman Korkoyah report that the Commission has received five complaints regarding the July 29, 2019 Combined Senatorial and Representative By-elections.
“With regards to the District #15 Representative By-elections, of the two complaints received, one is from Precinct Codes 30136, 30132, 30186 and 30437; and that the second complaint is from Candidate Bishop Slebo Frank against NEC poll workers with precinct Code 30187 and 30132,” he disclosed.
The other three complaints, the NEC boss disclosed further, relate to the Senatorial contest where the first complaint is from Joseph Kortee against NEC poll workers in District # 1 in Todee, with Voting Precinct Code # 30196, polling place #1.
He spoke of a second complaint and a third that he noted are from Francis Mannind and Larry Vlendee Jarbah respectively, both from District # 12 with Precinct Code # 30164,polling Place #4.
“The NEC wishes to remind all parties that complaints regarding polling and counting or tallying irregularities should be filed with the NEC Magistrate offices in Upper or Lower Montserrado County,” he told a news conference shortly before announcing the results.
