MONROVIA – The Liberian National Bar Association (LNBA) has strongly condemned the violent attack on the residence of His Honor Roosevelt Z. Willie, Resident Circuit Judge of Criminal Court ‘A”, Montserrado County.
According to a release issued yesterday, Thursday, 26 June 2025, the Bar disclosed that in the late evening hours of Wednesday, June 25, 2025, a group of unidentified individuals, allegedly armed with machetes and sticks and riding motorcycles, attempted to forcefully enter the residence of the judge.
The LNBA quoted “credible accounts from the Judge’s residence” as saying that the attackers were only deterred by the swift arrival of armed police officers, adding that it was the third reported incident involving an attack on the home of Judge Willie.
The Bar said it is also equally concerned by reports from other judges who have received similar threats and experienced attempted intrusions, including anonymous text messages designed to intimidate and obstruct the impartial discharge of their judicial duties.
The LNBA said it was condemning the incidents in the strongest possible terms, labeling them as acts of gangsterism that have no place in a civilized and democratic society.
“Such acts are a direct assault on the independence of the judiciary and undermine public confidence in the rule of law,” the legal statement said. “Judges must be allowed to carry out their functions free from intimidation, threats, or any form of influence, whether internal or external. The independence and safety of the judiciary are essential to preserving the integrity of Liberia’s justice system.”
The Liberian National Bar Association called on the Ministry of Justice and all relevant state security institutions to immediately investigate the report incident at Judge Willie’s residence and bring the culprits to justice.
The Bar also requested the Liberian National Police to provide adequate security and permanent police presence at the residence of Judge Roosevelt Z. Willie and all judges who are similarly targeted.
“These steps are necessary to prevent any further attempts that may result in harm to judicial officers or their families,” the LNBA said, noting that the Government of Liberia has a constitutional and moral obligation to ensure the safety of all citizens, especially those who serve the nation in high-risk roles.
“Judge Willie, in his capacity as a presiding judge over high-profile criminal matters, must be afforded enhanced security protection without delay,” the statement said.
The LNBA said it remains committed to safeguarding the independence of the judiciary and the protection of all judicial officers across the country.
The Liberia National Bar Association urged the public to stand in solidarity with the judiciary and to reject all forms of lawlessness and threats aimed at derailing the justice system.
In a related development, the LNBA extends its heartfelt congratulations to the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Liberia, Her Honor Sie-A-Nyene Gyapay Yuoh on the joyous occasion of her 70th birthday.
“This remarkable milestone is not only a celebration of years but a testament to a life of dedicated service, integrity, and excellence in the administration of justice,” the lawyers’ group said, acknowledging “with deep admiration the invaluable contributions of Her Honor to the judiciary and the nation at large.”
“As you mark this significant chapter, the Bar joins you in celebration and prays for your continued good health, long life, peace, and God’s choicest blessings,” the LNBA statement concluded.
