The vanguard opposition Liberty Party (LP) says a Voters’ Perception Survey (VPS) will be used to help influence the decision to be ultimately made at the Primary of the CPP in the wake of the unforeseeable event of the lack of consensus as to who should be selected a Presidential Candidate for the Collaborating Opposition Parties (CPP).
The Political leader of the LP also indicated that it is a duty of the collaborating parties to collectively share their determination mutually in claiming an overwhelming victory of agreed CPP candidates if the CPP truly desires to change the direction of the country, saying that the change does not begin in 2023, but rather begins in 2020.
The Liberty Party, in press statement attributed to its Political Leader, Grand Bassa County Senator Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence, also disclosed that members of the CPP, including the LP, the Unity Party (UP), Alternative National Congress (ANC) and the All Liberian Party (ALP) have moved toward consummating the framework documents for the formalization of their collaboration.
The parties have bridged the remaining hurdles to its collaboration, and have faithfully agreed to adhere to the following for the selection of its presidential candidate within the collaboration through Consensus, Voters Perception Survey (Not binding) or at a Primary, the LP political Leader said
“The CPP embraces and encourages the political aspirations of all of its leaders and members. Political aspirations are healthy for the fertilization of democracy. What is unhealthy is the temptation to assert an individual’s political ambition over the aspirations of the collective, and the general will of our people,” the statement said.
The Liberty Party have therefore come together as claimants to the will of the people to unite and rescue the country from its ongoing and steady socio-economic and political decline.
“It is therefore to be expected that political leaders and members of the four collaborating parties will work within their political parties to strengthen their constituencies for all future competitions within the CPP. What must be critically avoided is to lift internal competitions by which we examine each other and settle only for the best to distract our focus from the duties we owe ourselves and the Liberian people – a duty to rescue our country,” the Grand Bassa County Senator said.
This too, the Liberty Party political leader said in her statement, is within the spirit of the collaboration the four parties are about to declare; and added that admittedly, it is healthy for the fledging Liberian democracy. “We must remain convicted to the truth that the stronger the parties in a collaborative effort, the stronger will be the collaborative outcome,” she asserted.
To get to 2023, the statement furthered that the truth also is that the CPP has to be tested in 2020. “We must field our best and compete as one collective force in the upcoming Midterm Elections. We must win together for the Liberian people and announce a new day of doing business when the CPP senators are sworn in to represent the counties as we have promised our people that we would,” Senator Karngar stressed.
The LP iron lady indicated that winning every county is not expected to be an easy feat against a government overtaken by corruption. “However, it is a duty we must collectively share if we truly desire to change the direction of our country. The change does not begin in 2023. It begins in 2020,” the statement said, concluding that for the sake of our declining country, the CPP must stand up – strong and United – and win in 2020.
The Liberty Party’s position statement on finding the standard-bearer of four opposition collaborating political parties (CPP) comes at the backdrop of statement made by two of the collaborates to including the All-Liberian Party of Benoni Urey and the Alternative National Congress (ANC) of the Alexander Cummings regarding the way forward in determining who is the standard-bearer of the CPP.
In a recent press conference Mr. Benoni Urey who said the media and other Liberians have played their roles in ensuring that the CPP stay together hinted that the CPP has one issue in the collaboration framework document, which he decided to share with the people.
“There was a major contention in the document and that has to do with how the standard bearer will be elected. You know, all of you are cognizant of one thing that standard bearers are elected at primaries and conventions according to the Liberian electoral laws and practices,” Mr. further hinted, saying, “I Benoni Urey, political leader of the All Liberian Party, will not accept anything less than going to a primary and convention to elect our standard bearer, because that is constitutional in our country.”
Mr. Urey further noted that he has nothing against the ‘Voter Perspective Search’ which he noted can be used as guide, but added that it is left with them, the leaders of the CPP, to decide who they will elect as their standard-bearer.
But in reaction to this ALP position, the Alternative National Congress (ANC), a member of the Collaborating Political Parties, said the scars and losses from Cape Mount to the CPP are still fresh on the minds of the CPP, and noted that a smear campaign against the ANC has been long and consistent; with the source always been the same.
“But we have chosen to remain above the fray, and we will not travel the sad and pathetic path 2 of attacking, demeaning or denigrating any political leader or a sister party,” the ANC said
The ANC its statement made it categorically clear that at no time has the ANC opposed primaries. Instead, the ANC said it has embraced primaries and added that the Voters Perspective Survey will not replace the Primary, adding that the party has only demonstrated good faith, and offer a clear proposal for the selection of the Standard Bearer for the CPP.
Relating what it calls the facts in the CPP concerning candidate selection which are “irrefutable,”
Alternative National Congress said the Unity Party proposed CONSENSUS where the four political leaders will agree unanimously on who leads the ticket.
“The ANC proposed that if a decision is not reached by the four political leaders as to who heads the ticket, then a Voters’ Perception Survey should be conducted where the people will decide who they want to lead the ticket, and the decision would then be endorsed by a convention,” a press statement read by the ANC’s Secretary General Aloysius Toe to journalists indicated.
The ANC’s statement was reacting to a media engagement by the Standard-bearer and political leader of the All-Liberian Party (ALP), Mr. Benoni Urey, in which Mr. Urey said the selection of the Standard Bearer of the CPP has been a sticky question which Mr. Urey attempted to address at his media engage as 2023 draws nearer.
