MONROVIA – The Government of Liberia, through the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications (MoPT), has announced the successful completion of Liberia’s first-ever Digital Village, a landmark development in the nation’s telecommunications and technology sector. The initiative, spearheaded under the leadership of Minister Sekou Kromah, marks a turning point in the government’s commitment to building a digitally inclusive and sustainable future for Liberians.

The Digital Village, constructed in Foya District, Lofa County, is designed to serve as a model of innovation and rural development. The state-of-the-art facility provides green energy internet connectivity to more than 50 homes, including key institutions such as schools, hospitals, clinics, churches, mosques, and other community facilities within a 2.5-kilometer radius.

In addition, the project introduces smart classroom education, equipping students with modern learning tools and digital skills essential for navigating today’s technology-driven world. Minister Kromah described this as a transformative step for education in underserved communities, bridging the gap between urban and rural access to knowledge.

Beyond digital connectivity, the Digital Village also delivers free solar-powered electricity to more than 100 households in the district. This dual innovation—renewable energy and ICT access—is expected to enhance healthcare delivery, improve learning outcomes, empower local businesses, and raise the overall quality of life for residents.

The milestone was made possible through a strategic partnership with Huawei Technologies, a global leader in information and communications technology (ICT) solutions. Huawei’s sponsorship and technical support underscore the role of international collaboration in advancing Liberia’s digital transformation agenda.

Speaking on the achievement, Minister Sekou Kromah expressed optimism about the future of Liberia’s ICT sector.

“We are committed to leveraging technology to drive development and improve the lives of our citizens. The Digital Village demonstrates what is possible when government and partners work together for sustainable progress,” he stated.

The official launch of the Digital Village is expected to take place soon, with preparations already underway. The Ministry believes this project is not only a milestone for Lofa County but also a national symbol of progress in the government’s broader vision to transform Liberia into a digitally enabled nation.

Observers see the development as evidence of the government’s growing commitment to ICT and sustainable energy as drivers of socio-economic change. With continued partnerships, the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications plans to replicate the Digital Village model in other counties, ensuring that no community is left behind in Liberia’s digital revolution.

The completion of the Foya Digital Village stands as a testament to innovation, sustainability, and the government’s dedication to improving lives through technology.
