“It is a Complete Political Recklessness” -CDC Spokesman Lashes out at UP

MONROVIA: In the wake of a public declaration by the opposition Unity Party (UP) through some of its national leaders, the National Campaign Spokesman of the Coalition for Democratic Change(CDC), Cllr. Kanio Bai Gbala has termed the action of UP as a “complete political recklessness” and expressed dismay over the “undemocratic pronouncement of election results by the Unity Party led by its National Chairman Mr. Luther Tarpeh and other senior supporters of the Unity Party such as Senators Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence, Abraham Darius Dillon and Messrs. Robert Kpadeh and Amos Tweh.

Cllr. Gbala’s strong worded condemnation was made yesterday, Monday, October 16, 2023, when he appeared on the Freedom FM Face the Issues Talk Show, where he asserted that such “irresponsible and dangerous action on the part of the Unity Party” coupled with previous threatening statements uttered by its standard bearer Amb. Joseph Nyumah Boakai and other party stalwarts such as Mo Ali, Joseph Vallai, Amos Tweh etc. has the tendency to severely undermine the credibility of the National Elections Commission, provoke violence and undermine the peace and stability of the Liberian state.

The tough talking spokesman reminded the UP that it was on account of such provocative statements and actions that led to the brutal murder of two CDCians in Foya, Lofa County, another CDCian stoned to the brink of death and the Presidential motorcade attacked during the CDC’s closing rally on October 8.

He warned the former ruling party that all such actions are collectively serious violations not only of the Farmington Declaration but also of various criminal laws of the Liberian state that are punishable by jail time once due process is adduced.

Cllr. Gbala therefore called on all well-meaning Liberians, the Liberian Civil Society Council, the Elections Coordinating Committee, the Interreligious Council of Liberia, ECOWAS, the AU, the European Union, the US Embassy in Monrovia and other moral guarantors of the Liberian state to condemn in no uncertain terms this blatant act of provocation and incitement by the Unity Party which undermines the Liberian democratic space.

The top CDC official also assured all partisans and supporters of the party that the Weah-Taylor 2023 National Victory Campaign is alive and on course as always projected and cautioned them to remain calm, law-abiding and jubilant and to promptly report any illegal and/or violent actions to the appropriate authorities for legal redress in line with law.

It can be recalled that recently the Unity Party held a press conference at its national headquarters and said that based on the tally reports obtained by its party agents and poll watchers which they put at 90% reporting, they have won the just concluded general elections with a massive victory which they put at 60% of the total votes cast throughout the country.

The leaders who included Party’s Chairman, Rev. Luther Tarpeh, Senators Nyonblee Karnga Lawrence, Abraham Darius Dillon, national Secretary Amos Tweh, Mo Ali, Robert Kpadeh, anong others told the media that while NEC has the responsibility under the law to organize and declare results there was nothing wrong for them or any other person from tell the public of what they have as the reflection of a process they participated.

The leaders urged NEC to declare UP winners of the election and stop “playing delay tactics which could undermine the electoral process. Senator Dillon who said their tally was authentic, told newsmen that they will not accept anything less than victory and exhibited copies of tally sheets which according to him are their copies contained in a large blue polythene bag obtained at the polling stations and presented to the public as evidence.
