International Partners Weigh in on Nimba By-Election -Implore Liberians Play Roles to Harness Democratic Credential
MONROVIA – As citizens of Nimba County, the country’s second biggest populated province, goes to the polls tomorrow, Tuesday, April 22, international partners in the county are calling on all Liberians to play their roles in forging further democratic gains.
The by-election is made possible by vacancy created in the aftermath of the death of three-time elected Senator of the county, Prince Yormie Johnson.
On the ballot for the vacant seat are independent candidate Edith Gongloe-Weh, independent Candidate Torbor Tee Wonokay Farnga, Citizens Movement for Change (CMC) candidate B. Mack Gbliwon, Representative Samuel Gongben Kogar of the Movement for Democracy and Reconstruction (MDR); and Former District Number 9 Representative Richard Matenokay Tingban of the Vision for Liberia Transformation (VOLT).
Buildup to the election witnessed an upsurge of involvement in the campaign by throngs of politicians across aisle, casting light on the traditional political feud between the former ruling Coalition for Democratic Change and the Unity Party Alliance, the current government administration.
The Unity Party is fighting to prove its democratic credentials and its one year and half stewardship are still loved by the citizens while the wider opposition community led by the CDC is fighting to stymy the popularity of the UP.
In a release yesterday, the International Community assured Liberians it remains committed to supporting Liberia’s democratic journey.
“As Nimba heads to the by election on April 22, 2025, we encourage all stakeholders to abide by the terms of the Farmington River Declaration and all relevant laws to foster a credible, free, fair, inclusive and peaceful electoral process,” said the partners.
The International Community has commended the National Elections Commission, the Liberia National Police and all security agencies for the work done so far and urges all institutions to remain impartial to build confidence in a credible and successful electoral process.
“Finally, the International Community urges all citizens to play their role in forging further democratic gains in Liberia,” said the partners.
