House Speaker Convenes 3-Day Forum, Recruits Senior Advisors -73 Reps, EU, Sweden, UN, Others In Attendance

MONROVIA – As inks are yet to dry on controversy sparked by the holding the recent Senate Retreat in the port city of Buchanan Grand Bassa County, the other wing of the 55th Legislature, the House of Representatives, is currently convening at Farmington Hotel under the leadership of Speaker Jonathan Fonati Koffa. What is somewhat calming about the House’s version of assembly to take stock of its stewardship is that a horde of revered international organizations and nations are funding the Farmington Forum, something for which a lot of pundits are hailing the Speaker. The Honorable House of Representatives (HOR) has reportedly begun a three-day legislative Reform Forum 2024, at Farmington Hotel in Margibi County.

According to a release issued by the House’s Press Bureau, the the gathering runs from Thursday, June 20, 2024 to Sunday, June 23, 2024 under the theme, “Responsive Lawmaking, Proactive Oversight and People-Centered Representation.

The release says the “Legislative Capacity-Building Training forum is an initiative of the House leadership in partnership with European Union, Sweden Sverige, Irish Aid, UNDP and UN Women and it aimed at It giving the lawmakers an deeper and clearer understanding of their roles, duties, and responsibilities within the legislative framework, engagement with stakeholders, greater trust and cooperation between the legislature and stakeholders, leading to more constructive and positive interactions.

Forum, accordingly, also seeks to highlight expected outcome, shared understanding of the agenda and induction context and scope, Identification of specific expectations of the members and possible adjustment to the agenda and Introduction to Liberia’s legislative system.

Additionally, the gathering will underscore an overview of the New Elections Law – Better engagement with relevant stakeholders, including the National Elections Commission (NEC) and the Legislature, to ensure a coordinated and inclusive approach to electoral reforms.

All 73 Members of the House of Representatives and invited stakeholders are reportedly in attendance.

Some of the stakeholders and funders include European Union in Liberia, Sweden, Irish Aid, UN Women

UNDP Liberia.

Public reactions to the forum has been quite favorable, as Liberians resorted to the social media pages to hail the leadership of the House of Representatives for the initiative particularly in light of the repulsive public reactions characterizing the outcome of the Buchanan Senate Retreat.

Some said they were delighted that the House was inovative to have gotten collaboration of reputable institutions and nations.

The Speaker of the House has also been praised for some a number of Liberians consider his professional thoughtfulness to recruit a special advisor of foreign affairs and legislative engagement.

Ms. Urey will spearhead the Speaker’s agenda to foster collaboration between the Liberian Legislature and other international legislative bodies. She will coordinate, advise, and guide the Speaker’s foreign affairs initiatives within the Legislature. She will work in concert with the House’s Committee on Foreign Affairs.”

Ms. Urey holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in International Relations and Economics from McGill University and a certification from the London School of Economics in Business, International Relations, and Political Economy.

She is a politician, philanthropist, and businesswoman with over a decade of experience in leading and directing enterprises across Africa.
