MONROVIA: Members of the 54th legislature in the House of Representatives rose in its plenary yesterday, Wednesday, December 20, 2023 to maintain the long standing moratorium placed on the Bong County Social Development Accounts, thus rejecting the request of the Minister of Internal Affairs, Varney Sirleaf who had made the request to the lawmakers at the lower house.
Minister Sirleaf had appealed to the Plenary through the offices of the various representatives, seeking the removal of the moratorium imposed in 2019 following an audit conducted by the General Auditing Agency (GAC). The GAC’s audit, completed since then, had raised concerns about the setup of the County Council.
The Analyst legislative correspondent who covered the development said the decision to reject the appeal was premised on the fact that the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) had not yet reported on the matter just as members highlighted that the initiation of the moratorium had been at the behest of the Bong County legislative caucus.
Development experts believe that the decision underscored the importance placed on due process and committee evaluations in matters of financial governance.
Reports from the capitol building further according to some of the principal officers maintained that the House remains committed to ensuring transparency and accountability in the management of public funds.
