‘False And Misleading’ -Min. Piah rebuts reports on Netanyahu’s address

MONROVIA – The Government of Liberia has moved quickly to shut down a damaging claim. Reports alleged its delegation walked out as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed the UN General Assembly. Information Minister Jerolinmek Piah calls those reports false and misleading. He says the Deputy Chief of Mission and other officials were in the hall during the speech. The denial matters well beyond diplomatic protocol. Walkouts during Netanyahu’s speeches have become a public signal of position on the Gaza war. Liberia, now on the Security Council, has long kept close ties with Israel. Being counted among protesting delegations carries diplomatic weight. MONROVIA – The Liberian Government has refuted reports claiming that its delegation walked out of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) Hall while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was delivering his speech on Friday.

Speaking to DN News Liberia, Minister of Information, Cultural Affairs and Tourism Jerolinmek Matthew Piah described the report as false and misleading.

Delegation Was Present, Piah Insists

Piah said Liberia’s delegation was represented in the hall by the Deputy Chief of Mission of Liberia’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations, along with other officials, at the time of Netanyahu’s speech.

He said the Liberian delegation therefore did not walk out of the conference hall during the speech at the 81st Session of the UNGA in New York.

The clarification follows reports circulating that Liberia was among countries whose delegations left the General Assembly Hall while the Israeli Prime Minister was speaking.

The Liberian Government says the reports do not accurately reflect the presence of its delegation during the address.
