Dr. Maparyan No Stranger to UL -Set to Lead and Solve Identified Problems

MONROVIA – Since her appointment as President of the nation’s highest tertiary institution a fortnight ago by President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, the name Dr. Layli Maparyan continues to break the internet search engines as people are talking here, there and yonder about her suitability for the tough job of heading the nation’s most politically charged learning environment in the country. But as The Analyst has discovered, Dr. Maparyan is not a stranger to the University of Liberia, exemplified by hardcore prima facie evidence of her sojourn here in 2010 which establishes her familiarity with the socioeconomic and academic contexts of her environment. And she is ready to do her job to transform UL into a beacon of unparalleled educational enlightenment.

“The expectations are that I will lead the University of Liberia with everything I’ve got and everything I’ve learned for the 30 years of my career as an academic and an administrator to help solve the problems that people have identified, and to everyone feel that the University of Liberia is the beacon as it is for education and that the University will bring the best out,” Dr. Maparyan informed the media yesterday immediately following her meeting with the Liberian leader.

No Stranger to UL

According to documents in the possession of this paper, in 2010 Dr. Maparyan is not a newbie to the University of Liberia academic setting. At the time, she got actively involved with the University of Liberia to the extent that she cofacilitated a Palava Hut discussion on the UL main campus.

For those who are unfamiliar with UL campus politicking, the Palaver Hut, which reflects the microcosm of the larger society, is the main sanctuary where students converged regularly to discuss issues affecting the University and the larger society.  As a guest speaker at one of the Palaver Hut speakeasies, Dr. Maparyan was reportedly observed to be in her element when she addressed the student popular on that fateful day on June 12, 2010.

She also used her visit to the University of Liberia to familiarize herself with the classroom, as she extensively toured various classrooms on the main campus.

“After the classroom visit, we attended another student forum arranged by Saki to discuss the Gender Studies Program initiative. Similar to the one that took place in the palava hut at the main campus, this one took place in the main auditorium at Fendell and was equally vigorous and informative,” Dr. Maparyan stated in June 2010 of her foray into the University of Liberia.

Another professor at the University of Liberia has also sent a clarion call to the government of Liberia to help make Dr. Maparyan’s easier by providing her administration the necessary support.

“Now that UL has a new President, I kindly appeal to The Visitor, all Stakeholders and Leaders of Liberia to close down activities at UL for one calendar year and do the following:

“1. Allocate adequate funds and empower the New President to conduct comprehensive physical rehabilitations of the entire UL facilities, such as, but not limited to the renovations of all college, academic, residential, and administrative buildings; Build new ones if necessary, 2. Empower the New President to hire qualified professors, instructors, and staff with the advice and consents of the UL Board of Directors or Advisors, 3. Purchase new transportations for students, staff, instructors and staff who attend classes, work or teach classes at the Fendell Campus, and, 4. Construct satellite UL campuses around the Country in all political subdivisions, especially those without public Community Colleges.

“When these things are done and done well, the New President will have the necessary tools to do great things for UL in particular and Liberia as a whole. Not only that, the New President and Administration, students, faculties and staff would be coming to a university equipped with modern facilities and equipment destined for today’s conducive learning environment,” the professor intoned.
