Cllr. Gongoe Makes Moving Case for Kamala Harris -Says ‘She’s a Leader Who Will Fight for Us All,’

Despite pockets of contentions that the United States, Liberia’s ‘quasi’ colonizer, has done little or poorly in helping the country overcome its infrastructure and other development deficits in a 200-year relationship as colonizers of other African countries did or are doing for former colonies, it is an open secret amongst most citizens if not all that the US is a second home. Thousands of Liberians are US-passport carriers, and they do vote in US elections, including the one that goes in full swing this November. Thus, as the elections fever heats up, Liberians, both US citizens and noncitizens, have refused to remain silent and inactive in voicing their perspectives on who—between presidential contenders former President Donald Trump and current Vice President Hamala Harris—as to who represents a better choice, particularly for Liberia and all diasporic peoples. A renowned Liberian lawyer and human rights advocate thinks VP Harris is, as The Analyst reports.    

Cllr Tiawan Saye Gongloe is calling on all American citizens, particularly of Liberian origin, to Support Kamala Harris for President of the United States.

Cllr. Tiawan Saye Gongloe, Assistant Professor of Law, Human Rights Lawyer, and Presidential Candidate of the Liberian People’s Party (LPP) in the 2023 Presidential and Legislative Elections, has said in a special position statement: “I call on all my fellow Africans, especially those of Liberian descent, to unite behind Kamala Harris. Together, we can ensure a future where the United States continues to be a force for good, tackling the global challenges of climate change, corruption, and injustice head-on.”

“Let us stand on the right side of history and vote for Kamala Harris—a leader who will fight for us all,” he said further.

“Fellow Africans, and particularly my Liberian brothers and sisters, I stand before you today with an urgent call: it is time for all citizens of African descent in the United States, especially those of Liberian origin, to rally behind Kamala Harris for President. Our historical connection with the United States, a bond that stretches back to the founding of Liberia, and our position as the first independent republic in Africa, compels us to support a leader who understands and values this relationship. Kamala Harris is that leader.”

Gongloe intimated that at a time when the world faces unprecedented challenges, Kamala Harris stands as a beacon of hope and resilience because her commitment to the values of democracy, human rights, integrity, the rule of law, and equality transcend borders, and it is this commitment that makes her the right choice to lead the United States—and by extension, the world—into a more just and peaceful future.

The Liberian lawyer outlined a range of VP Harris’ commitments on global issue, which according to him, makes “her a better choice over her opponent”.

Climate Change Leadership

According to Gongloe, one of the most pressing issues facing the planet today is climate change, and Kamala Harris has been a steadfast advocate for environmental justice.

“She understands the urgent need for the United States to lead the global fight against climate change, not only for the sake of Americans, but also for all nations, particularly those most vulnerable to its impacts,” he said, adding: “Smaller countries like Liberia are already feeling the devastating effects of global warming, from rising sea levels to unpredictable weather patterns that threaten our agriculture and livelihoods. The level of heat felt during the last dry season in Liberia, for example, was unprecedented.”

The human rights advocate opines that Kamala Harris’s climate plan emphasizes a just transition to clean energy, reducing carbon emissions, and supporting countries like Liberia that are disproportionately affected by climate change.

“She recognizes that the United States, as one of the world’s largest economies, has a responsibility to lead by example,” he emphasized.

“Her presidency would prioritize rejoining global agreements like the Paris Climate Accord and working collaboratively with African nations to ensure they are not left behind in the transition to a more sustainable future. Harris’s leadership on climate change will help avert further environmental degradation, protect vulnerable communities, and preserve our planet for future generations.”

Fighting Corruption and Strengthening U.S. Leadership

Cllr Gongloe also said Kamala Harris is not just a leader for America but a leader for the world.

As a staunch advocate against corruption, Harris understands that global progress requires transparent governance and the rule of law, he added. “Corruption is a cancer that continues to plague many countries, including Liberia. It weakens institutions, stifles economic growth, and perpetuates poverty.”

He said under Harris’s leadership, the United States will play a critical role in supporting African nations like Liberia in the fight against corruption.

He continued: “[Harri’s experience as a prosecutor and Attorney General uniquely equips her to tackle global corruption. She will work closely with African leaders to strengthen anti-corruption frameworks, support reforms, and ensure that U.S. foreign aid is directed toward programs that promote transparency and accountability.

“Kamala Harris understands that corruption is not just a local issue—it is a global threat that undermines democracy and development everywhere. Her presidency will reinforce U.S. partnerships with smaller nations, providing the necessary support and resources to help them win the war against corruption and build stronger, more accountable institutions.”

Building on Liberia’s Special Relationship with the United States

Regarding which of the US presidential contenders will foster a better policy on US-Liberia relations, Cllr Gongloe said Harris will be.Liberia and the United States share a unique and historical relationship, rooted in Liberia’s founding, and Gongloe observed that “we have always looked to the United States as a model of democracy and good governance, and now, as the world faces new and evolving challenges, we look to Kamala Harris to build upon that legacy”.

When former President George W. Bush called for the resignation of President Charles Taylor, the Liberian lawyer recalled, “it opened the door for peace in Liberia. Kamala Harris has the same moral clarity and courage to confront global challenges and support African nations in their pursuit of justice and good governance.”

He insists that Harris would continue America’s long-standing tradition of supporting Liberia’s development and progress, as “she recognizes the strategic importance of U.S.-Africa relations and will ensure that smaller nations like ours have a strong voice in global affairs. Her commitment to collaboration and partnership is exactly what Africa needs at this pivotal moment”.

A Call to Action for the African and Liberian Diaspora

Cllr Gongloe the personal values of the democratic candidate, stating that he values the contributions of African immigrants and the African diaspora to the United States.

“She has consistently shown respect and appreciation for our role in advancing American society—whether in the fields of medicine, business, science, or public policy,” he asserted further.

He made specific mention of Dr. Dugbe Chris Nyan, recognized in the United States as an inventor; Dr. Charles Bardua a leading thorasic surgeon; Dr. George Klay Kieh who is known as a leading academic; Atty. Roberta Weeks Brown, and Seaward Cooper and Antoinette Sayeh who have held respectable positions at the World Bank, just to name a few.

He said VP Harris understands that the strength of the United States lies in its diversity, and she will continue to champion policies that protect immigrants, including those of African origin.

“For Liberians in the United States, particularly in California, where Kamala Harris has a long history of engaging with your community, and working with some of you, this is your moment,” he said. “I urge you mobilize, organize, and vote for a leader who understands your unique challenges and shares your values. Harris has stood with us before, and now it is your turn to stand with and by her.”

A Future of Justice, Peace, and Global Leadership

Gongloe also opined that in a time when divisive rhetoric and isolationism threaten to undo years of progress, Kamala Harris offers a vision of inclusivity, unity, and global leadership.

According to him her presidency will not only be a victory for the United States but for the world, as she will lead with compassion, strength, and a commitment to justice that will benefit all the people of the world, particularly those in vulnerable nations like Liberia.

The Middle East Conflict

He further noted that Kamala Harris’ position in condemning the October 7 attack on Israel, and at the same time advocating for a two-state solution is consistent with Africa’s position as was eloquently stated by President Wiliam R. Tolbert at the United Nations General Assembly in 1979, as Chairman of the Organization of African.
