A Pro-Brumskine political action group established in early 2000, the Friends of Brumskine (FOB), will on April 27, 2021, launch the Charles Walker Brumskine Memorial Lecture Series at the Auditorium of the University of Liberia on Capitol Hill.
The occasion will coincide with the 70th birth anniversary of the late Cllr. Charles Brumskine, and is in recognition of the indelible marks he left on Liberia’s legal and political landscape, a press release has said.
One of Liberia’s outstanding legal practitioners and former President of the Liberia National Bar Association, Cllr. N. Osward Tweh of the Tweh, Pierre & Associates, will deliver the keynote address on the theme, “Building a Nation-State on the Platform of Rule of Law and Good Governance” while a founding member of FOB/USA, Mr. Debar W. Allen, will launch the Memorial Lecture Series.
According to the Chairman, CWB Memorial Lecture Series, Mr. Jacob J. Smith, former Liberian Ambassador to the United Nations, Ambassador Lewis G. Browne and an international civil servant, Madam Sarah Beysolow Nyanti, will serve as panelists.
The two panelists are expected to provide legal and scholarly interpretations as to the correlation between the rule of law and good governance as strong pillars of our democracy, the release said.
The Friends of Brumskine entertains the conviction that out of this edition and subsequent ones, appropriate policy prescriptions will be advanced to influence policy change in government, the release continued.
The release said several dignitaries including the Brumskine Family, Former Vice President of Liberia, Ambassador Joseph N. Boakai, the Political Leader of Liberty Party and Chair of the Collaborating Political Parties, Senator Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence, Senior Government officials, Members of the Clergy, Leaders of the Alternative National Congress (ANC) and All Liberian Party (ALP), leaders of other registered political parties, members of the diplomatic corps and legal practitioners, are expected to grace the occasion. Student organizations, workers union and major civil society organizations, are also expected to be in attendance.
FOB, the release intimated, was the single most popular political action group in support of Cllr. Charles Brumskine during the reign of former Liberian President Charles G. Taylor.
The group is credited for the triumphant entry of Cllr. Brumskine into Liberia following his exile life in the United States of America on January 21, 2003.
The FOB successfully negotiated with the Liberia Unification Party (LUP) to form a strong political partnership that would have seen Cllr. Brumskine’s ascendency to the Presidency of Liberia.
Due to unfavorable political undercurrents within the party, the FOB quickly worked with like-minded Liberians to form the Liberty Party which Cllr. Brumskine headed prior to his unfortunate demise in 2019.
FOB sees the launch of the Memorial Lecture Series which is expected to be a quarterly event, as a lasting reminder to Liberians that patriotism remains the only avenue for Liberia’s transformation, the release concluded.
