Big Retirement Package For Elected Liberians -New Act Gives Pres, VP, Justices, Lawmakers Handsome Benefits
MONROVIA – After lengthy discussions against public outcry about the bumper remuneration in the government that cut across the three branches of government, the Liberian Senate on Tuesday, March 14, 2023 passed the controversial pension bill for citizens who formerly served as President, Vice President, the Speaker, Justices and all members of the National legislature which means that they will enjoy a hefty financial benefit in retirement.
The new amendments now provides a 50% of the last salaries per annum if those who occupy those positions retire from active government service and the said amount shall be paid in equal monthly installments.
The decision of the Senate also entails that the President, Vice President, Speaker, Deputy Speaker, and Chief Justice will be allowed to have personal staff and police officers if they are retired into private life.
Further look in the amendments has it that if any of the officials retire and subsequently receive gainful employment and then retire finally, their Pension will be the highest of the two instead of being asked to make a choice.
According to sources from the Senate, the bill seeks to repeal and or amend certain portions of Title 19, Legislative Act, Title 12, Executive Law of Liberia, and Title 17, the Judiciary Law (1972), as amended in 2003.
