Big Relief for Indigent Citizens -Govt to Launch Free National Health Insurance

MONROVIA – Despite economic constraints the government of Liberia contends with, amid competitive priorities for national development, President Joseph Nyuma Boakai and team are nonetheless thinking about the ‘masses of the people’ of Liberia, how to put smiles on their faces also. A healthy nation is a productive nation, so the maxim goes. And it looks like good news is on the way as the Government prepares to launch free national health insurance – system, if set into motion, is meant to guarantee healthcare access for all citizens, mimicked after best practices whereby “healthcare services are provided at no or low cost, and the government pays for the services from a public fund”. The ruling Unity Party government, led by President Joseph Boakai, is taking the bull by the horn, resolved to launch the National Health Insurance Scheme in the country. This is accordingly a part of effort to make healthcare delivery affordable to low income earners, physically challenged and the entire citizenry of Liberia.

The plan was first hinted by the president during his state of the nation address in January 2025 and will be implemented by the management of the Liberia Telecommunication Authority, in collaboration with the, Digital Transformation Project.

According to the entity’s acting Boss, the scheme will kick off with a pilot project to be launched simultaneously in three counties including – Montserrado, Bomi, and Margibi –  July 1, 2025.

Mr. Abdullah L. Kamara said the process will be sponsored by the LTA, and will last for only six months covering up to five thousand people including the cripple, blind, death and dumps and other physically challenged Liberians at the group of 77 on Newport Street, Monrovia.

Speaking in an interview with this paper, Mr. Kamara emphasized that thereafter a new policy will be drawn in which every Liberian will be covered under the National Health Insurance Scheme.

The LTA boss disclosed further that the National Insurance Company of Liberia, NICOL, will serve as executing agency of the scheme, using modern technology for the coverage.

He stressed that the use of technology will help strengthen accountability in the system and give government an insight into the work of the scheme.
