AML Launches ‘Litter Parade’ Initiative -Intends Boosting Workplace & Community Environmental Health
MONROVIA – In an effort to enhance environmental responsibility and cleanliness, ArcelorMittal Liberia (AML) has launched a new initiative known as the “Litter Parade.”
The program, which started this week at AML’s operations in Buchanan, Grand Bassa County, is designed to foster a culture of environmental stewardship among employees and improve sanitation across workplace and surrounding community areas.
The “Litter Parade” involves AML employees coming together on a dedicated day each month to clear away litter from their immediate workspaces, common areas, and the surrounding outdoor environment.
The collected waste—ranging from plastic and paper to other debris—will then be sorted and properly disposed of in designated recycling or waste bins.
AML believes this waste management approach aligns with its ongoing commitment to promote sustainability and environmental awareness within the company and the communities it operates in.
“We are proud to see our staff taking an active role in keeping our surroundings clean and healthy. Environmental protection is a value we hold deeply, and the Litter Parade is a way for us to show our commitment not only through our work in mining but also in how we care for our communities,” a post on the company’s Facebook page noted
Employees who participated in the first “Litter Parade” were recognized for their contributions, as this reflects AML’s appreciation for efforts that reinforce a safe, clean, and healthy environment.
The initiative will take place regularly to complement AML’s regular health, sanitation, and hygiene measures.
With this routine, AML aims to keep its operational areas clean while encouraging staff to adopt responsible environmental habits both at work and beyond. The company plans to expand the initiative in the coming months, potentially involving local communities around Buchanan to reinforce collective action in environmental conservation.
The “Litter Parade” is the latest step in AML’s series of environmentally focused programs.
In recent years, the company has invested extensively in initiatives that prioritize environmental protection, from reducing pollution to managing waste responsibly. AML has already implemented an effective waste management system within its facilities to reduce the environmental impact of its operations. This includes installing modern waste disposal systems that comply with international standards and working to minimize pollution risks associated with mining activities.
Additionally, AML has conducted tree-planting exercises in degraded areas around its operational sites to promote forest conservation and offset carbon emissions. This reforestation effort is aimed at mitigating the environmental impact of mining activities and restoring ecosystems in Grand Bassa and Nimba counties.
Through its corporate social responsibility programs, AML has also undertaken educational campaigns to raise awareness about environmental sustainability among community members. These efforts include collaborating with local communities to educate people on the importance of protecting the environment and responsibly managing waste. The company believes that fostering environmental consciousness in the younger generation is key to ensuring a sustainable future.
ArcelorMittal Liberia is noted for its commitment to environmental protection which extends beyond compliance; it represents a core principle embedded in the company’s operations. As a leading investor in Liberia’s private sector, AML has emphasized the importance of balancing industrial mining progress with environmental responsibility. With initiatives like the “Litter Parade,” AML aims to set an example for other companies and encouraging collective responsibility for Liberia’s natural environment.
AML’s recent environmental efforts come at a time when Liberia faces significant challenges related to waste management and environmental degradation. By championing sustainability, many believe the company not only contributes to a cleaner environment but also builds a legacy of responsible corporate conduct that aligns with the broader goals of national development.
As the “Litter Parade” continues in the months ahead, many in the ranks of ArcelorMittal Liberia leadership are hopeful that its commitment to cleanliness and environmental responsibility will inspire similar efforts across the nation, helping to make Liberia a cleaner, healthier place for all.
