MONROVIA – As part of its ongoing efforts to strengthen numeracy and literacy skills among residents in fenceline communities, the ArcelorMittal Liberia Training Academy (AMLTA) has launched a training program to prepare them for future job opportunities.

The initiative aims to equip job applicants and those seeking vocational training with foundational skills required to pass aptitude tests administered by the Academy.

The eight-week program covers English, Math, Job Readiness, Business, and Emotional Intelligence, with tests to monitor progress after each session.

The program was officially launched on September 11 at Greenhill Quarry in Bong County, bringing together AMLTA staff, Community Relations officers, local chiefs, and 22 selected applicants.

According to Training Manager Victor Loubser, many applicants struggled with numeracy and literacy skills in previous assessments. This program addresses that gap.

Loubser emphasized that the training aligns with ArcelorMittal Global Mining CEO Kleber Silva’s mandate to prioritize people from fenceline communities for employment and training opportunities.

“ArcelorMittal’s operation needs to benefit the people in fenceline communities because they are directly impacted,” Loubser stressed.

AMLTA partnered with African Bible College University to train teachers and deploy them across Grand Bassa, Bong, and Nimba Counties. Applicants were categorized into P1, P2, and P3 levels based on assessment results, with the possibility of moving up levels depending on progress.

In Bong County, three centers host the training: Greenhill Quarry, Gbarta Public School, and Rock Crusher. Trainers report marked improvement in attendance and performance. Similar training sessions are taking place in Nimba County, yielding comparable results.

This initiative not only addresses immediate literacy and numeracy needs but also positions young people from concession areas for sustainable livelihoods, jobs, and skills training.

By investing in local talent, ArcelorMittal Liberia is contributing to Liberia’s economic growth and development.
