China’s Ambassador to Liberia, Yin Chengwu, has reaffirmed Beijing’s commitment to deepening bilateral cooperation with Liberia as he hosted a colorful reception to usher in the Year of the Horse and celebrate the Spring Festival.

Addressing diplomats, senior Liberian officials, members of the Chinese community, and invited guests, Ambassador Yin described the Spring Festival as the most significant traditional celebration of the Chinese people, symbolizing family reunion, renewal, and aspirations for a better future.

“In a world full of turbulence and uncertainty, we hope that people all over the world can join the Chinese people in celebrating this wonderful moment,” he said.

The Ambassador characterized 2025 as an extraordinary year for China, noting that the country commemorated the 80th anniversary of victory in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War while advancing national modernization goals.

He disclosed that China’s economy grew by five percent in 2025, with Gross Domestic Product surpassing RMB 140 trillion yuan for the first time. According to him, China’s scientific, technological, and defense capabilities also reached new heights as the country concluded its 14th Five-Year Plan and mapped out priorities for the 15th Five-Year Plan.

On the diplomatic front, Ambassador Yin highlighted what he termed “Major-Country Diplomacy with Chinese Characteristics,” referencing initiatives championed by Chinese President Xi Jinping, including the Global Development Initiative, Global Security Initiative, Global Civilization Initiative, and the newly proposed Global Governance Initiative.

“These initiatives demonstrate China’s commitment to a more just and equitable international order,” he said.

Flourishing China–Liberia Partnership

Turning to bilateral relations, the Ambassador praised the growing strategic partnership between China and Liberia under the leadership of President Xi Jinping and Liberian President Joseph Nyuma Boakai.

He noted that high-level exchanges between the two nations intensified in 2025, with senior Liberian officials visiting China and both heads of state maintaining close communication.

Ambassador Yin disclosed that China supported Liberia’s successful candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council and fully implemented zero-tariff treatment for 100 percent of Liberian exports to China. Citing China Customs statistics, he said Liberia’s exports to China rose by 23.9 percent to reach US$131 million.

He also outlined ongoing infrastructure and development projects, including the construction of two overpass bridges on Tubman Boulevard, the National Clinical Diagnosis and Treatment Laboratory at the 14th Military Hospital, the Bamboo and Rattan Project, and the Liberia Broadcasting System project, which is nearing handover.

The Ambassador commended Liberia’s continued adherence to the one-China principle, describing it as a cornerstone of mutual trust.

Ambassador Yin emphasized that 2026 marks the beginning of China’s 15th Five-Year Plan and the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Africa. He reaffirmed Beijing’s intention to align its development strategies with Liberia’s ARREST Agenda to deliver more tangible benefits for both nations.

He further announced that 2026 has been designated the China-Africa Year of People-to-People Exchanges, with approximately 600 activities planned across the continent to strengthen cultural and social ties.

“China will work with Liberia to carry out a series of activities to further enhance friendship between our two peoples,” he stated.

Ambassador Yin also paid tribute to Chinese nationals in Liberia for their contributions to economic cooperation and community development, assuring them that the Embassy would continue safeguarding their rights and interests under a “people-first” diplomatic approach.

Liberia Reaffirms Partnership

For his part, Vice President Jeremiah Kpan Koung reiterated Liberia’s gratitude to the People’s Republic of China and pledged to further deepen bilateral cooperation, praising Beijing’s enduring contributions to Liberia’s development and global progress.

The Vice President, who conveyed greetings on behalf of President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, the Government, and the people of Liberia to China, described the occasion as more than a cultural celebration, calling it “a powerful reminder for the judicious use of vision” and an opportunity to reflect on China’s remarkable transformation over the decades.

Vice President Koung praised China’s evolution into one of the world’s most influential nations, describing it as “one of the most inspiring stories of our time.”

“Through strategic planning, innovation, investment in human capital, and unwavering commitment to development, China has demonstrated the resilience of its people and has become a driving force of global growth, trade, technology, and innovation,” he stated.

He emphasized that Liberia values its longstanding collaboration with China and is eager to pursue stronger cooperation across multiple sectors.

According to the Vice President, Liberia–China relations are rooted in respect, solidarity, and shared aspirations for prosperity, while acknowledging China’s steadfast support during critical periods of Liberia’s rebuilding and transformation.

“We are deeply grateful for the visible and lasting contributions China has made to Liberia’s infrastructure development,” Koung said, referencing ongoing projects including the construction of overpass bridges and other major initiatives.

He also commended China’s investment in education and capacity building, noting that scholarships and training programs for Liberian students represent an investment in Liberia’s future.

Vice President Koung outlined key areas for expanded collaboration, including trade, agriculture, energy, infrastructure, technology transfer, and people-to-people exchanges, while expressing admiration for China’s role in promoting global peace, security, and development initiatives.

“There is even greater potential ahead for our partnership,” he said. “The bond between Liberia and China will continue to grow deeper, stronger, and more impactful for generations to come.”

The Spring Festival celebration brought together members of the Chinese community and senior Liberian officials, including Vice President Jeremiah Kpan Koung, Speaker Richard Nagbe Koon, ministers, and heads of government agencies.
