All Roads Lead to Bassa -As CPP Unveils Cummings’ Running Mate Saturday -Massive Preparations Underway; 50K Partisans Moving into Buchanan
MONROVIA : The suspense generated over who becomes the running mate to the Standard Bearer of the Collaborating Political Party (CPP), Alexander B. Cummings, will come to an end this Saturday, May 27, 2023 when officials, members, supporters and well-wishers of the CPP throng Buchanan City, Grand Bassa County for the formal and official announcement of the running mate in what is expected to be “the greatest gathering ever in the region”, according to CPP national chairman Musa Hassan Bility who provided insight of what the public should expect on that day.
Speaking via a podcast yesterday, Wednesday, May 24, 2023 on the “massive preparation” underway in Buchanan City, Mr. Bility said the occasion will not be like the ordinary gathering of politicians but an event that will leave an indelible mark in the region as the party prepares its way to take state power come October 10, 2023.
“On Friday, May 26, 2023, there will be a convoy of about 150 vehicles including ambulances headed by our Standard bearer that will depart from 19th Street, Sinkor, our National Headquarters, and will be heading towards Buchanan for the occasion where we are going to unveil our running mate.
“Come to Bassa on Saturday, we are not just announcing the running mate. We are doing more than that. We are taking control of Grand Bassa County. ABC will be in charge to fix this country”, he said.
Citizens from the various Districts in Grand Bassa County have, since the last two weeks, launched a massive campaign rallying citizens under the banner, “One of US for All” in support and solidarity for the CPP preferred choice of Vice Standard Bearer believed to be a prominent citizen of Grand Bassa County.
CPP Standard Bearer Alexander Cummings upon his official endorsement at the May 18, CPP National Convention in Gompa, Nimba County, promised to name his preferred choice of running mate in the October 10, general elections in their county of origin. There are all indications that the special CPP Committee charged with responsibility to vet for the most suitable Vice Standard Bearer amongst several eligible and competent high profile Liberians have reportedly settled on a prominent female of Grand Bassa County.
Thousands of CPP partisans, supporters, sympathizers and well-wishers from the 15 counties of Liberia, are already in Buchanan for the ceremony, promising to be the largest political gathering in Liberian history. Mr. Cummings will lead a high-power delegation of CPP stalwarts along with hundreds of Montserrado County partisans, in a 150-vehicle convoy to Buchanan for the program.
The program will be preceded by a grand parade by thousands of citizens throughout the principal streets of Buchanan, and followed by massive celebrations including cultural and traditional performances and musical extravaganza by popular Liberian artists.
CPP National Chairman, Mr. Musa Bility, has offered to fuel the over 150 vehicles moving into Buchanan for the pronouncement and subsequent endorsement of the CPP Vice Standard Bearer.
Liberians from the diaspora have since this week began arriving for the naming ceremony, described by an elder as a “Pride for the Bassa People to unite and support one of us, to ascend to the second highest position in government.”
Speaking further about the significance of the Buchanan program, Bility said it was a special occasion to herald the turning point in the history of the CPP where it is breaking the obstacle it has been experiencing in creating a niche into the Bassa belt which is one of the biggest vote rich regions in the country.
“Our greatest challenge was in the Bassa Belt, but we have it under our control now. We are going to the North, then the West, the South and by the time we go to the East, victory will be ours.
“We are not worried. We have 20 years of electioneering experience. In our party, we have accomplished lawyers, business persons, and very important people, so we are on course”, he said.
Mr. Bility told his audience that the CPP has put in place all machinery to ensure that its electoral pursuit will come out fruitful, adding that as the national Chairman he has a vision of transforming the fortune of the party to democratically capture power from the CDC-led government under President George Manneh Weah come October 10, 2023.
“I have the vision to deliver state power to the CPP and I am pleased to say that the vision is on course; I know how I want it, I know how to get it. I am happy we are on our way to state power. All the people who should have been the obstacles on our way have all joined us”, Bility said confidently.
He said the successes recorded in terms of outreach to the people brought traction to the party, and moving forward, the party is not going to toy with the goodwill from the citizens as it is focused to work with them to ensure that victory comes the way of the party during the ensuing general elections on October 10, 2023.
He said besides the huge turnout being expected from the Bassa Belt which includes, Grand Bassa, Rivercess, Margibi and Montserrado, another number of Bassa people are expected from Bong and Nimba as well as other Liberians from all parts of the country to be in attendance in Buchanan for the big event.
It can be recalled that at the end of the CPP convention held in Ganta recently where Cummings was unanimously elected by delegates as the Standard Bearer, he could not pick his running mate because of a constitutional provision of the party that a running mate should be named in the county of origin of the running mate and therefore it was agreed that the naming should be at a latter day. The delegates also agreed that the person should be named on May 27, 2023.
With the program taking place in Grand Bassa county, it follows that the running mate will be named from the county but there has been no information about who the person will be, though a lot of names have been thrown out, including Cllr. Charlyne M. Brumskine, the daughter of the founder of the Liberty Party (LP), the late Cllr. Charles Walker Brumskine.
The CPP, comprising the Alternative National Congress (ANC), the Liberty Party, political auxiliaries, civil society and interest groups, is seemingly the most formidable opposition determined to capture state power from the CDC government of President George Weah.
