MONROVIA – Is former President George Manneh Weah really in charge of his brainchild political behemoth, the opposition Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) that democratically broke the ruling Unity Party’s 12-year hegemony in 2017, but itself got narrowly whipped by a cash-strapped Unity Party in 2023? If Weah is in charge of the CDC, why didn’t he convince the 11 to 12 CDC lawmakers to stand with embattled House Speaker J. Fonati Koffa, but left him to join the renegade “Majority Bloc” and unconstitutionally remove Speaker Koffa? These and other pertinent questions were parried to former President Weah’s Chief of Staff Eugene Lenn Nagbe who provided answers when he appeared on Spoon Talk Live on Friday, April 4, 2025; The Analyst reports.
According to Mr. Nagbe, President Weah is totally in charge of the CDC, and he has been in charge since CDC was conceived in 2004. Nagbe said the question that should be asked is whether the Unity Party Standard Bearer Joseph Nyuma Boakai is in charge of his party, especially given the fact he never took any action against those Unity Party lawmakers who violated the constitution by unconstitutionally removing the elected Speaker.
“What did the Unity Party do to those who are breaking the law? That’s the question. Why don’t you ask them? So does it mean President Boakai is not in charge of the UP? Unlike Boakai, President Weah was in touch with elected members of the House. When members of the House, including Thomas Fallah joined the rebel lawmakers to break the law, the CDC took action and expelled him.
“Let me further clarify that the former President was not on vacation, he was working. He was in touch. Even Speaker Koffa and President Boakai were out of the country when the plot to foster illegality started. We were in the same country, Italy, but different cities. So, for you to say that President Weah had gone to Milan and later to Paris, being that he was on vacation. No, he was engaged actively. And you saw the duty he had to perform as Africa’s only Ballon D’Or,” President Weah’s Chief of Staff Nagbe said.
When asked about the timing of the information regarding the 12 CDC lawmakers leaving the party to support the opposition lawmakers in the House of Representatives, Eugene Nagbe said the same day that President Boakai received the information that over 50% of the Unity Party people in the House of Representatives were supporting unconstitutional behavior, it was the same cay that the CDC got wind of the information.
“Two of them got the information that same day. Even while we were in Italy, former President Weah spoke to Representative Thomas Fallah and it was carried live. He warned him not to proceed in the negative way he was proceeding. And when he still continued, he was expelled. A political party has an obligation to punish people who are wayward, who violate the law, and you are asking the person who took action and leaving the person who continues to support the illegality. So, you should ask the Standard Bearer of the Unity if he’s in charge of the UP. If he’s in charge and they are carrying out this illegality, who’s to blame, is it not him? So, why are you asking Weah who took action and left UP? You have not asked one of them. You should ask the Unity Party Chairman or the Secretary General, what did President Boakai do or what is he doing in light of the illegality and unconstitutional behavior that is happening,” Mr. Nagbe said.
Weah Will Certainly Run in 2029
Addressing one of the burning concerns on the minds of Liberians, Mr. Nagbe said former President George Manneh Weah will definitely be running in 2029, with stronger comeback messages.
“Absolutely, Weah will be running in 2029. Stanton, I called you when you were in the States and you were ironing Joseph Boakai’s clothes. I called you to stop because they were deceiving you. The former President is running again and he will win. Do you know why? Because, in spite of the fact that he had only four years, given the fact that COVID-19 took away two years, he performed. The other day somebody told me, Eugene, if they ask you about the cake at the airport what would you say? I said, the president had a vision for RIA Road, and today we see how far it’s going; the same way he had a vision for the 14 Military Hospital, the Emirates Hospital; the same way he had vision for all of these vocational schools that are around the country, and the roads, it’s the same way he had a vision for a Liberia Airline. He started the process. We went to France. We had a meeting with the owners of the plane that was supposed to come. COVID interrupted it. Is that something to make fun of?” Nagbe wondered.
Debunking the EPS Director Armored Vehicle Claim
Attempting to seal a wrap on claims allegedly made recently by Executive Protective Service (EPS) Director Sam Gaye that President Weah failed to turn over an assigned bullet-proof vehicle after he left office in 2024, Eugene Nagbe said it is a blatant lie.
“Wether he told it to you or to the public, I saw a post from him. Former President Weah did not take a single government vehicle with him. He turned over everything. Three bullet-proof vehicles: two new vehicles and the one that he inherited from former President Sirleaf. All bullet-proof, all three of them. In addition to that, there were 15 Land Cruisers bought in 2023. Today, I came with the Bill of Sale of the vehicles, including serial numbers, model, weight, and how much was the price for them. In addition to the bullet proof, we purchased 15 vehicles, excluding the two bullet proof vehicles that former President Weah purchased and the one that former President Sirleaf purchased.
“On August 22, 2023, former President weah purchased 15 new vehicles for the EPS. In addition to that, the two armored vehicles purchased August 2022, plus the one purchased by President Sirleaf that President WEah inherited, he turned over all. I don’t want to talk about other EPS vehicles. All were turned over in pristine condition.
“Sam Gaye came with the head of Motor Pool of the EPS to inspect each vehicle. It took hours and they turned them over to him. So why would he come and say the former President carried vehicles?” Nagbe wondered.
