MONROVIA – A sudden runway emergency involving a private jet at Roberts International Airport (RIA) has brought all Thursday night flight operations to a standstill, the Liberia Airport Authority (LAA) confirmed in a public statement issued late Thursday evening.

According to the LAA, the incident occurred when a private aircraft suffered a tire burst upon landing at Liberia’s primary international gateway. The malfunction left the jet immobilized on the main runway, disrupting regular air traffic and prompting an immediate response from airport authorities and emergency services.

“In strict adherence to international safety protocols, the Liberia Airport Authority has suspended all scheduled flights for the night of May 29, 2025,” the statement read. “This decision is necessary to ensure the protection of all passengers, crew, and airport personnel.”

Officials say that while there were no reported injuries aboard the aircraft, the nature of the incident — involving a disabled aircraft on an active runway — posed a potential safety hazard and made it impossible for other aircraft to land or depart safely.

The airport’s single-runway configuration further complicated the situation, as there are no alternative runways to temporarily divert air traffic while clearance operations are underway.

The LAA’s emergency response team, along with aviation technical experts, mobilized swiftly following the incident. As of Thursday night, operations were ongoing to assess the situation, secure the area, and remove the immobilized aircraft from the runway.

“All relevant agencies have been engaged to support the ongoing effort,” the LAA noted, adding that teams are working around the clock to restore full operational capacity to the airport.

Although no specific timeline has been provided for when flights will resume, the LAA has pledged to provide regular updates and maintain transparent communication with travelers, airlines, and the general public.

The sudden suspension of all night flights has left dozens of passengers stranded or facing delays, both at Roberts International Airport and at departure locations abroad. The LAA has acknowledged the inconvenience caused by the incident and extended its apologies to affected travelers.

“We understand the inconvenience this may cause and assure the public that every effort is being made to resolve the situation promptly,” the airport authority stated.

Local airlines and international carriers operating through RIA have been advised to coordinate with passengers regarding rescheduling and alternate travel arrangements.

Reaction among travelers has ranged from frustration to understanding, with many expressing concern about the broader implications for airport safety. However, aviation experts have praised the LAA’s swift adherence to international safety guidelines, noting that the decision to suspend flights is standard procedure in such incidents.

“The LAA has taken the right approach by prioritizing safety above all else,” said one aviation analyst based in Monrovia. “A tire burst, while not uncommon, can lead to complications if not managed properly. Ensuring that the aircraft is safely removed and the runway thoroughly inspected is critical before normal operations resume.”

The LAA reiterated its commitment to the safety and security of all airport users, emphasizing that passenger welfare remains at the core of its decision-making process.

While the timeline for full operational restoration remains unclear, the incident serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of aviation and the importance of preparedness and rapid response in crisis scenarios.

Passengers with scheduled flights in the coming days are advised to stay in touch with their airlines and monitor official LAA channels for the latest information.

As the situation continues to develop, the Liberia Airport Authority is urging the public to remain patient and cooperative.
