EFFL Nat’l Youths Condemn Attack on MCSS Students -Calls on UP Govt to Observe International Conventions
MONROVIA – The Revolutionary National Youth Command of the Economic Freedom Fighters of Liberia (NYC-EFFL) strongly condemns the brutal attack on peaceful and harmless students of the Monrovia Consolidated School System (MCSS) by the police under the Unity Party-led government.
“This unprovoked act of aggression is a gross violation of Article 17 of the 1986 Constitution of the Republic of Liberia, which guarantees the right to peaceful assembly, and Article 20 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which upholds the right to freedom of expression and peaceful protest,” the NYC-EFFL said in a March 26, press release.
According to the group, the repeated and unlawful attacks by state security forces on students should serve as a stark reminder to this government of historic student uprisings across the world, including:
“The Soweto Uprising (1976, South Africa) – where students protested against apartheid and the imposition of Afrikaans as a medium of instruction, facing brutal state repression.
“The Tiananmen Square Protests (1989, China) – where students advocating for democracy were violently suppressed by government forces.
“The 1979 Student Protest in Liberia – where students, advocating for better living conditions, were met with severe state crackdown.
“The NYC-EFFL calls on the Government of Liberia to immediately conduct a transparent and speedy investigation into this matter and hold those responsible accountable. The students were well within their rights to demand that their government pay their teachers, who have abandoned classrooms due to months of unpaid salaries, with some not even being on the official payroll.
“We demand justice for the peaceful students who were unjustly attacked. The NYC-EFFL stands in unwavering solidarity with these students because they are the future of this country, and their voices must not be silenced by state-sponsored brutality. No justice, no peace!” the Revolutionary National Youth Command of the EFFL said.
