MONROVIA – The opposition Citizens Movement for Change (CMC) has taken serious exception to recent statements emanating from the Chairman of the ruling Unity Party (UP) to the effect that the Unity Party will engage with the CMC for a possible collaboration leading up to the 2029 presidential and general elections.
Reacting strongly in an August 20, 2025 press release issued against Chairman Luther Tarpeh’s assertion that he had already informed CMC Political Leader Musa Hassan Bility to strengthen his party because the UP will be coming to bring them over into the current Rescue Alliance before the 2029 presidential and general elections, the CMC said the UP Chairman’s statement is merely speculative, and shows that the ruling party does not understand the reason behind the CMC’s existence.
“Let it be known, Mr. Chairman, that the Citizens Movement for Change was founded with a single objective in mind – to challenge the misrule of the forces represented by the UP.
“Here’s what we mean: The CMC was formed in direct response to the Unity Part’s failure to address critical issues facing our nation. Its existence stems from a desire for genuine change rather than political posturing. With this as our core purpose, why would we “hold talks” with the UP? The CMC cannot and will not engage in any dialogue with the UP – a party notorious for so recklessly betraying Liberians’ dreams and aspirations.
“As a movement, we consider “talks” with the UP a direct contradiction to our vision, sacrifices, and aspirations. Our mission is to disrupt the status quo in which corruption, deception, and abuse are normalized by the UP.
“Our message to you, Mr. Chairman, is to stop daydreaming and level up. Liberians have long woken up and parted ways with the UP. That reality cannot be changed by wishful thinking,” said the CMC press release signed by Smith M. Toby, Media Communications and Press Director of the Citizens Movement for Change.
The CMC statement comes hot on the heels of UP Chairman Tarpeh’s statement about forming an alliance with the CMC during the 2029 elections.
Quizzed as to whether the Unity Party Alliance is still a formidable force, and whether it is prepared to include new political parties, Chairman Tarpeh proudly boasted that his party is preparing to include the CMC into its fold.
“We are together, we are political collaborators, and we are comrades. Even including Musa Bility’s party. I told him. I said Musa, go and strengthen that party, we will come for that party during the 2029 election. We will do that. We are not going to shy away. Look, Unity Party has everything. You’re talking about the qualification, men and women of integrity, the nationalistic spirit, Unity Party has everything to government this country for the next 100 years,” Chairman Tarpeh boasted.
