Cllr. Cephus Appointed Chair of ABA Advisory Council -In Recognition Of His Outstanding Legal Prowess
The African Bar Association, the umbrella institution of all legal minds on the African Continent has formalized the appointment of Cllr. Sayma Syrenius Cephus, Solicitor General and Chief Prosecutor of Liberia as the maiden Chairman of the Advisory Council of the African Bar Association, the preferment he got when was recommended by former Presidents of the continental legal body who recently attended the annual conference held in Niamey, Republic of Niger.
In a letter dated November 30, 2021 from the institution and signed by its President Mr. Hannibai Egbe and addressed to Cllr. Cephus, a copy of which was sent to The Analyst, the body said on behalf of the Governing and Executive Councils, it was appointed Cllr. Cephus to the position of Chairman of the Advisory Board of the African Bar Association.
“This Board and your Appointment which is pursuant to the resolution passed at the 2021 annual Conference Niarney, Republic of Niger, is predicated upon your track record of meritorious to the African Legal Community, the African Bar Association and your satisfactory Legal practice”, the letter said.
The Advisory Board which is to be made up of not less than 10 but not more than 15 members, will have but not limited to Advise the Afba or diverse Policy and Legal issues; Organize into a veritable and useful Committee past and present Heads of States, past Government Leaders; Eminent persons of African descent to advise the Bar and to help resolve Conflicts and Contentious issues as they arise in Africa; To raise funds for the African Bar Association and to promote its interest and influence across the globe especially in Africa and Arranging meetings and missions for the President of the Bar and to carry out other assignments as may be directed by President or the Governing Council.
The Board shall meet regularly as may be necessary from time to time and the President or any other Official designated by the President may attend such meetings as may be necessary. The Board shall report directly to the President. The Chairman and members are appointed for an initial period of 2 years renewable and a list of initial members is attached to this letter.
As is expected of this highly demanding position, the erudite legal mind as Chairman, will lead the process of working with former Presidents, international jurists and politicians in providing a platform to defend democracy, good governance, rule of law and human rights.
It can be recalled that Cllr Cephus while making a remark at the conference had called on his fellow legal practitioners to summon the courage to defend democracy in the face of the threat to good governance, rule of law and participatory democracy where military men are gradually returning to saddle of leadership on the continent as the result of bad leadership practices in a number of African countries by their leaders.
It was reported that his message resonated well with the participants and that have informed the decision of the august body to confer on him the appointment.
