Bill To Establish Bong University Introduced

In an effort to direct higher education to the full development of the human person, Bong County electoral district #4 Representative Robert Flomo Womba has submitted an act to the House of Representatives to repeal the 2015 Act Incorporating the Bong County Technical College (BCTC) and to establish in lieu thereof the Bong County University (BCU) of 2025 and grant it charter.

In a formal communication to the House’s plenary on Thursday, May 22, 2025, Representative Womba said, “This Act in view of the location of Bong County in the central region of this country, which attracts young scholars from all walks of life seeking quality education in preparation for nation building.

He explained in his communication by saying, “Bong County has forty one (41) High Schools, and graduates approximately two thousand one hundred and seven (2,107) Students Annually that need Higher and Quality Education for self-advancement in preparation for Nation Building.

“A University Education is ultimately designed to equip individuals coming out of High Schools with a broad range of knowledge and skills that prepare them for their future careers and personal endeavors, shaping them into well-rounded Citizens.

“We will continue to encourage every ounce of courage within the limits of our legislative prerogatives to provide legislative instruments that directly affect our people and serve as catalysts in meeting the development goals of Liberia,” he said, noting, “with our time on Capitol Hill, our people can be assured of a representation that is people-centered and interwoven with legislations that encompass all of Liberia.”

In the proposed Act, Representative Robert Flomo Womba said the aims and objective of the Bong University is, “To create, establish and implement an educational institution of higher learning within Bong County of the Republic of Liberia to grant Bachelor’s, Masters’, and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Degrees in relevant disciplines.

He noted that the act when passed into law, the university will be a help wherein graduates of accredited secondary schools in the County and across the Country may pursue tertiary education in any field of learning provided by the Bong County University (BCU).

He furthered that the Act will provide instructions and learning in all spheres of professional and higher education that would effectively contribute to the growth, improvement, and manpower development of Bong County, and the Republic of Liberia.

He said the aim of establishing the Bong County University is to maintain a center of learning at a university level where members of all races, classes and creeds, gender and ethnic backgrounds can enjoy an equal opportunity to study, conduct research, learn and achieve knowledge, and skills, adding, “and to engage in meaningful activities, to broaden and deepening their understanding and treasure of the truth for the basis of mankind; to earn that adequate knowledge which inspires men and women to attempt to remove all biases and insecurities.”

According to the Bong County lawmaker, “This ACT is congenially aligned with the PRESIDENTs ARREST Agenda which incorporates EDUCTION as a key component for the attainment of national and holistic development that affects every facet of our society.

However the Bill repeal the 2015 Act Incorporating the Bong County Technical College (BCTC) and to establish in lieu thereof the Bong County University (BCU) of 2025 was given it first reading in open session on Thursday, May 22, 2025 by plenary and forwarded to committee room.
