Smiles for Cummings’ Prestigious Award -Families, Friends Say Honor Well-Deserved

MONROVIA – Barely did inks get dry on the award presented to one of Liberia’s foremost politicians then a massive outpour of compliments and congratulations became to flood towards the honoree, Mr. Alexander B. Cummings.

In the justification of the award, titled Thomas W. Cole Jr. Presidential Award, the Clark Atlanta University tender congratulations to Mr. Cummings on receiving the award describing it a powerful and well-deserved moment.

The CAU said it was an honor to see Cummings being celebrated for his incredible contributions and unwavering commitment to excellence.

“Last night was truly an honor. Watching Clark Atlanta University (CAU) recognize and celebrate Mr. Alexander B. Cummings was a beautiful and unforgettable experience.”

Surrounded by his family, friends, and supporters, Mr. Cummings was clearly cherished and deeply respected—not just as a proud alumnus and former chair of the board, but as a man whose impact on the university and beyond is undeniable.

Said one whose name was not recorded: “Cummings is indeed a good gentleman. The University proved itself unbiased and with a glorious eye to discern the perfect fit. He is a very smart business and responsible politicians.” 

“For those of us who were there, witnessing him in his element—his space, his roots, his private sector world was powerful. We’ve always seen the love and support he receives from his political supporters, but this was different. This was the other side: the institution and professional world that shaped him, embracing and uplifting him in return.”

One part that touched deeply was his entrance. Each of the five honorees chose a song to be introduced with. As Mr. Cummings entered, Deng’s Grateful played, and I felt chills. The pride I felt in that moment is hard to put into words.

Mr. Cummings received the Thomas W. Cole Jr. Presidential Award, named after the founding president of Clark Atlanta University. Although all five honorees were celebrated, his award stood out—it was clearly the most significant of the night.

That’s why his segment came last. It was the highlight. A moment reserved for the most distinguished honoree.

Mr. Cummings is a special person. It’s unfortunate that many in the Liberian community choose to overlook his contributions, instead focusing on irrelevant criticisms. This man has poured into Liberia, just as he has into CAU and other spaces—and yet, he is too often dismissed.

But last night? Last night, none of that mattered. CAU saw him. They honored him. And I was proud—so proud—to witness it. It was a beautiful sight to see, and I am genuinely honored to have been there.
