MONROVIA – The history of Liberia’s relationship with the United States is intertwined with the evolution of many of the country’s national institutions, including the University of Liberia, the nation’s oldest and most prominent public university. Among the pivotal moments in this relationship is the Greystone Exchange, a landmark arrangement that transformed a historic property once owned by Liberia College into a lasting financial asset for the university. As the University of Liberia commemorates its 75th anniversary, the institution and its international partners are revisiting this important chapter of diplomatic and educational cooperation. As THE ANALYST reports, a commemorative dialogue bringing together senior diplomats from Liberia and the United States will explore the historical significance and enduring legacy of the Greystone property agreement.
The Embassy of the Republic of Liberia in Washington, D.C., has announced a major commemorative event marking the 75th anniversary of the University of Liberia, featuring a high-level diplomatic dialogue on one of the institution’s most significant historical milestones.
According to a statement issued by the Embassy, the program—titled “Two Diplomats in Conversation on a Historic Moment & Its Legacy: The Greystone Exchange”—will take place on Thursday, March 12, 2026, from 12:00 p.m. to 1:15 p.m. at the University of Liberia Capitol Hill Auditorium in Monrovia.
The event forms part of the University of Liberia’s anniversary activities and is expected to highlight the historical and diplomatic significance of the Greystone property, whose transformation into a financial asset helped strengthen the University’s institutional foundation.
The commemorative dialogue will feature His Excellency Dr. Al Hassan Conteh, Ambassador of the Republic of Liberia to the United States, and Hon. Joe Zadrozny, Chargé d’Affaires of the United States Embassy in Liberia.
The discussion will be moderated by Dr. Layli Maparyan, President of the University of Liberia.
According to the statement issued by the University of Liberia, the event will provide a reflective platform for examining a pivotal chapter in Liberia–United States diplomatic relations and the role that the Greystone Exchange played in shaping the financial future of Liberia’s premier institution of higher learning.
Historic Greystone Property
The Greystone property, originally owned by Liberia College, later became a cornerstone of the University of Liberia’s endowment.
When the property was leased to the United States Government for the construction of the new U.S. Embassy complex in Monrovia, the arrangement created a transformative financial structure that continues to support the University’s academic programs and institutional development.
University officials say the agreement not only strengthened the financial sustainability of the institution but also reinforced the longstanding partnership between Liberia and the United States.
The Greystone Exchange has since been widely regarded as a landmark example of diplomatic cooperation contributing directly to educational advancement in Liberia.
According to the statement, the upcoming dialogue will provide an opportunity for participants to explore both the historical circumstances surrounding the exchange and its enduring impact on higher education in the country.
Strengthening Liberia–US Partnership
Organizers say the event will also reflect on how visionary leadership and diplomatic engagement helped secure a sustainable future for the University of Liberia.
Through the Greystone arrangement, the University was able to strengthen its endowment and expand its capacity to deliver academic programs and national service.
The conversation between Ambassador Conteh and Chargé d’Affaires Zadrozny is expected to highlight how cooperation between Liberia and the United States has contributed to strengthening educational institutions and broader national development initiatives.
The event comes at a time when Liberia continues to deepen its diplomatic and educational partnerships with international partners.
Celebrating 75 Years Of Academic Service
The University of Liberia, guided by its historic motto “Lux in Tenebris”—meaning “Light in Darkness”—is marking seventy-five years of academic excellence, national service, and global engagement.
Founded as Liberia College in the nineteenth century before evolving into the modern University of Liberia, the institution has played a central role in training generations of Liberian professionals, leaders, and public servants.
As part of the anniversary celebrations, the University is highlighting historic milestones that have shaped its institutional growth and national contributions.
The Greystone Exchange stands out as one of the defining moments in the University’s history, linking diplomatic cooperation with sustainable educational development.
Invitation To Diaspora And Public
Organizers say the commemorative dialogue is intended to bring together members of the Liberian diaspora, academic partners, friends of Liberia, and the general public to reflect on the historical legacy of the exchange.
The event will also serve as a platform for discussing how historical partnerships can continue to support Liberia’s educational advancement and national development.
Members of the public have been warmly invited to attend the event and participate in the discussion on the shared diplomatic and academic history between Liberia and the United States.
